Amway College Football Poll 2016: Complete Week 7 Rankings Revealed

Timothy RappOct 10, 2016

The SEC was the focal point Saturday, with two huge matchups in the conference, but Week 6 ultimately provided results that will have huge implications for the College Football Playoff in December.

That was certainly reflected in the Amway Coaches Poll this week. Below, we'll review that poll along with the Bleacher Report rankings and break down the key results from this weekend.

A few teams padded the resume they'll hand to the College Football Playoff committee come the end of the season. A few more teams failed to get the job done.

Alabama, as usual, was in the former camp. The Crimson Tide once again showcased their new up-tempo, explosive offense, rolling past a good Arkansas team 49-30.

"It works well for us, it's when we play the best," coach Nick Saban said of the offensive scheme, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN.com). "Our quarterback is well-suited for it, and I think we've done a good job as a staff developing the system where it's maybe a little more efficient than when we started doing it a couple years ago."

Of course, there's always something to be improved upon under Saban.

"We're certainly not where we want to be, not in all facets of the game," he noted. "Sometimes we play great on offense, but we've just got to be more consistent when we play really good teams."

One thing that's been consistent is that Alabama wins. Eighteen straight times after Saturday, to be precise. That unbeaten mark will be tested in the next two weeks, however, with a trip to Tennessee next week before Texas A&M comes to Tuscaloosa in two weeks.

Those teams met Saturday, meanwhile, with Texas A&M sneaking past the Volunteers 45-38 in double overtime. That leaves the Aggies with a bye to prepare for the biggest game of their season against Alabama, a contest that will almost assuredly decide the SEC West, while Tennessee is left to face Alabama next weekend.

A second straight loss for the Vols could be devastating, as it would take their fate in the SEC East out of their hands. Florida currently has just one loss in the conference, meaning the Gators would win the East if Tennessee lost to Alabama and the Gators won the rest of their SEC games.

Tennessee's playoff hopes were always going to be on the line against Alabama. The Vols' shot at an SEC title will now be up for grabs as well.

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports felt the matchup between the Aggies and Volunteers distracted from the real story Saturday:

Indeed, Washington annihilated Oregon 70-21, the second straight week the Huskies have brushed aside a traditional Pac-12 power following their 44-6 drubbing of Stanford the week before. If the Huskies weren't considered a legitimate contender before, it's time to consider Washington a real contender.

Certainly, the Huskies can now see their path to the playoff, as Ralph D. Russo of the Associated Press noted:

Houston is no longer on that list, however. Navy upset the Cougars on Saturday, all but ending their national title hopes and perhaps taking Louisville's playoff chances down in the wreckage, too. The Cardinals' biggest remaining game on the schedule is against Houston, though beating an undefeated Houston ranked in the Top Five would have been more impressive for Louisville's resume.

Houston wasn't the only team upset this week. Florida State knocked off Miami, Washington State beat Stanford, Virginia Tech knocked off North Carolina and Colorado lost to USC. Certainly, the landscape of the Top 25 changed quite a bit in a week.

It likely will be altered again next week, with Alabama facing Tennessee, Ohio State clashing against Wisconsin, Miami taking on North Carolina and Ole Miss battling Arkansas.
