College Football Scores 2016: Key Players from Top 25 Teams' Week 6 Results

Steve SilvermanOct 8, 2016

The Houston Cougars had been one of the nation's best teams through their first five games and had risen to the No. 6 spot in the rankings.

However, the Navy Midshipmen were not overly impressed and proved to be inhospitable hosts, as they upset the Cougars 46-40.

Navy's rushing attack was dominant, as the Middies ran for 306 yards and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. Quarterback Will Worth led the way with 115 rushing yards on 32 carries, and while he only threw five passes, two of them went for touchdowns.

It was Navy's first win over a Top 10 opponent since the Midshipmen beat South Carolina in 1984.

Quarterback Greg Ward Jr. threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars.

If you like touchdowns and scoring, the Red River Showdown between Oklahoma and Texas was for you.

If you like defense and some semblance of balanced football, the last place you wanted to be was at the Cotton Bowl, where Oklahoma outlasted Texas 45-40 in the annual battle between the Sooners and the Longhorns.

The second half was a scorefest after a reasonable first half that saw the Sooners take a 14-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. Oklahoma got the best of the Longhorns 31-27 in the final 30 minutes.

Texas had taken a 27-21 lead on a 45-yard pass from Shane Buechele to Dorian Leonard in the third quarter, but the Sooners responded with three straight touchdowns to seize control of the game.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield had a solid game, completing 22 of 31 passes for 390 yards with three touchdowns. As effective as Mayfield was, he had tremendous support from running back Samaje Perine and wide receiver Dede Westbrook (see below).

Stars of the Week

WR Dede Westbrook, Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns engaged in the highest-scoring edition of their long rivalry, and the star power on the field for the Sooners helped them take control and win the game.

Westbrook was remarkable for Bob Stoops' team, as he caught 10 passes from Mayfield for 232 yards and found his way into the end zone three times. All of Westbrook's touchdowns were long plays through the porous Texas secondary. His TD receptions were 72, 47 and 42 yards.

RB Samaje Perine, Oklahoma

The running game was also effective for the Sooners, and Perine had an eye-opening performance.

He carried the ball 35 times for 214 yards and pounded the ball into the end zone two times. Perine used his power to soften up the Texas defense quite a bit throughout the game.

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley said his players were responsible for the offensive balance that the Sooners demonstrated all day.

"I didn't do it. They did it," Riley told ESPN's Max Olson. "Dede made a ton of plays, and Samaje ran as good as I've ever seen him. Just a great performance from all those guys."

QB Greg Ward Jr., Houston

While the Houston quarterback was not celebrating after his team dropped a 46-40 decision to unranked Navy, Ward still had a memorable game.

Ward completed 32 of 50 passes for 359 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He threw scoring passes to Steven Dunbar, Dillon Birden and Chance Allen, and he also ran for a touchdown.

RB Trayveon Williams, Texas A&M

The shifty running back had a huge game, as he carried the ball 28 times for 215 yards and one TD.

Williams had a huge run late in the fourth quarter and appeared to set up Daniel LaCamera for the game-winning 38-yard field goal, but the kicker hooked that attempt wide left.

Williams appeared to put the game away with a late TD run, but just as he was about to cross the goal line, Tennessee's defensive back Malik Foreman knocked the ball out of his hands, and it went through the end zone for a touchback.

The Aggies finally put the Vols away in the second overtime on a short touchdown run by Trevor Knight.
