NHL Trade Rumors: Latest Involving Jacob Trouba and Cam Fowler

Joe PantornoOct 6, 2016

Less than one week separates hockey fans from another NHL season, but that doesn't mean that teams are content with their rosters.

As the clock ticks down to puck drop, there are still some trade rumors swirling around that involve big names who may be on the cusp of being shipped to new locations.

Here is the latest from the NHL rumor mill.

Jacob Trouba

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba is looking to become a premier blueliner in the NHL, and he believes he can't do it in Manitoba.

On Sept. 24, his agent, Kurt Overhardt, released this statement (via Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet):

"

Our client, Jacob Trouba, will not be attending the Winnipeg Jets NHL training camp. Since May, we have been working with the Jets management in an effort to facilitate a trade of Jacob’s rights. Both parties continue to work on this matter.

There has been no negotiation regarding the terms of a contract between our client and the Jets over the course of the last several months. The situation is not about money; it is solely about our client having the opportunity to realize his potential as a right shot NHL defenseman.

To the Jets credit, the club has two outstanding right shot veteran defensemen and our client simply wants the opportunity to have a greater role. As a consequence of the Jets depth on the right side, we believe it is in both parties’ best interest to facilitate a mutually advantageous trade.

Our client has nothing but respect for the people and City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Jets, its fans, management and ownership - our desire to get him moved has everything to do with opportunity. We will continue to work with the Jets in good faith to achieve this end.

"

The 22-year-old has played second fiddle in Winnipeg to Dustin Byfuglien and Tyler Myers, both of whom logged more minutes per game than he did last season despite posting a plus-10 rating and 21 points in 81 games.

Even though Trouba's contract expired at the end of the 2015-16 season, the Jets still own his rights as he was a restricted free agent this summer.

One team has been in the mix for Trouba for quite some time, and that's the Detroit Red Wings, according to TSN reporter Darren Dreger's conversation with Vancouver's TSN 1040 (via Chris Nichols of Today's Slapshot).

However, Winnipeg might not find a Red Wing that is suitable enough to deal Trouba for:

"

I mentioned Detroit a couple of weeks ago publicly as being one of the primary suitors for Jacob Trouba. I can tell you that [Red Wings general manager] Kenny Holland has worked incredibly hard over the past couple few years at trying to add a defenseman. I know that he’s had conversations with [Jets general manager Kevin] Cheveldayoff, and I believe that Holland is willing to make a deal for just about anyone outside of Dylan Larkin. But there’s no one really in the Detroit Red Wings organization that seems to be a fit for Cheveldayoff, which tells me that Winnipeg, again, is committed to being patient.

"

While Winnipeg might have to continue waiting for the right combination to deal the young defenseman, he now faces time on the sidelines to start the season as he is without a contract.

Ducks Looking to Shore Up Blue Line

The Anaheim Ducks have some major question marks to address heading into the 2016 season.

Hampus Lindholm—another 22-year-old defenseman who also happens to be a restricted free agent—has not signed a deal with the Ducks and hasn't been at training camp with the team. Instead, he's been training in his home country of Sweden, per Mike Halford of NBC Sports.

According to Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register, Lindholm is "believed to be seeking more than $6 million per season over eight years," but the Ducks don't have that kind of money to offer him yet.

Per Spotrac, the Ducks' total cap allocations sit at just under $65.5 million, less than $8 million beneath the max salary cap of $73 million.

However, they are trying to free up some space. NBC's Pierre McGuire told TSN's Blake Price that Anaheim is in "trade talks with an Eastern Conference team" that could take a big contract off of the books in order to sign Lindholm.

One player who has been on the trading block this offseason is defenseman Cam Fowler, who is owed $4 million in each of the next two seasons, per Spotrac.

It looked like he was destined to move in late June when the Montreal Canadiens were linked to him, per Dreger, but the trade of P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators for Shea Weber stymied those talks.

Look for Fowler to be a name that surfaces in the coming days in Anaheim's last attempt to clear some space for Lindholm.
