College Football Recruits Who Dominated Stat Sheet in Week 4
The final weekend of September featured a significant shakeup in college football rankings as teams continue to carve out an identity for 2016. It also set the stage for high school standouts to serve up statements in the form of individual dominance.
Prospects who hope to eventually shine on a national stage continue to carry their respective prep programs through the opening stretch of this season. Postseason implications are always present, along with the opportunity for increased collegiate interest, so each matchup carries plenty of intrigue.
Our weekly rundown of highly productive recruits rolls toward October with an examination of performances ranging from prolific passing attacks to devastating defensive efforts.
5-Star QB Tua Tagovailoa
1 of 8
Class: 2017
High School: St. Louis (Honolulu)

The 2016 Elite 11 MVP made another move up Hawaii's all-time state passing yardage leaderboard Friday night, becoming the fifth quarterback to surpass 7,000 yards in a high school career. Tua Tagovailoa completed 41 of 47 pass attempts for 493 yards and five touchdowns, according to Billy Hull of Hawaii Prep World.
He is now fewer than 900 yards shy of replacing former St. Louis High School star Timmy Chang as the state's all-time leading passer. Tagovailoa, who propelled his team to a 42-24 win, has thrown 75 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions since 2014.
5-Star RB Cam Akers
2 of 8
Class: 2017
High School: Clinton (Clinton, Mississippi)
Size: 5'11", 213 lbs
Composite Ranking: No. 2 running back; No. 8 overall
Recruitment Status: Offers include Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Tennessee
Though he's received the majority of his high school snaps at quarterback, Cam Akers belongs in the discussion of athletes who warrant consideration as this cycle's premier rusher. His latest performance further showcased those skills, as Akers turned 19 carries into 203 yards and two scores, according to Will Sammon of The Clarion-Ledger.
Touchdown runs of 67 and 71 yards augmented an impressive aerial effort (12-of-22 passing for 192 yards), enabling Clinton High School to remain unbeaten with a 30-21 win over Madison Central High School. Akers, a former Alabama Crimson Tide commit, has gained at least 100 yards on the ground in four of five games this fall.
4-Star QB Grant Gunnell
3 of 8
Class: 2019
High School: St. Pius X (Houston)
Size: 6'5 ½", 192 lbs
Composite Ranking: No. 3 pro-style quarterback; No. 53 overall

Lone Star State gunslinger Grant Gunnell continues to earn widespread early attention from college coaching staffs, posting another impressive display Friday night. He throttled Rudder High School throughout a 61-20 victory, per Brad Cox of The Eagle, throwing for 355 yards and seven touchdowns.
His evening included a series of 11 consecutive completions in the first half, helping to establish a 40-0 halftime lead. Gunnell, who projects among the largest quarterbacks in his class, has collected 2,014 passing yards and 32 total touchdowns through five games as a sophomore, per MaxPreps.
4-Star DE Joshua Kaindoh
4 of 8
Class: 2017
High School: IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida)
Size: 6'6", 256 lbs
Composite Ranking: No. 2 strong-side defensive end; No. 39 overall
Recruitment Status: Committed to Maryland
Among the most physically intimidating members of this cycle's defensive class, Joshua Kaindoh has spent his high school career making life difficult for offensive linemen. He shined early and often Friday during a 38-0 victory over Boyd Anderson High School, racking up four first-half sacks, per Jim Halley of USA Today.
Kaindoh, a Baltimore area transplant, consistently created problems for Boyd Anderson quarterback Shabazz Telfort, who holds multiple FBS offers. Well on his way toward a career-best campaign, the four sacks Friday exceed his entire sack total of 2015 (3.5 sacks, per MaxPreps).
3-Star QB Devin Leary
5 of 8
Class: 2018
High School: Timber Creek (Erial, New Jersey)
Size: 6'2" 185 lbs
Composite Ranking: No. 16 pro-style quarterback; No. 391 overall

Bleacher Report gained an up-close glimpse of Devin Leary while spending Friday night along the Timber Creek High School sideline, and he didn't disappoint. The junior completed 12 of 20 pass attempts for 275 yards and five touchdowns, lighting up an overwhelmed Clearview High School defense throughout a 49-7 win.
Leary, who most recently added an offer from Syracuse, now has 15 touchdown tosses through three games and should emphatically exceed sophomore season totals (2,605 yards and 23 scores, per MaxPreps) while challenging school and regional passing records. He impressed this spring at the Elite 11 Washington D.C. regional and will vie for an invitation to national finals next year, along with consideration for a recruiting industry upgrade into 4-star territory.
4-Star WR Amari Rodgers
6 of 8
Class: 2017
High School: Knoxville Catholic (Knoxville, Tennessee)
Size: 5'9 ½", 203 lbs
Composite Ranking: No. 14 receiver; No. 123 overall
Recruitment Status: Committed to Clemson
Amari Rodgers threw himself a birthday party at the expense of a beleaguered Belfry High School defense Friday. He celebrated 17 spins around the sun with eight receptions for 251 yards and four scores, according to Tony Crumpton of TigerNet.
A standout this summer at The Opening, Rodgers registered touchdown catches of 12, 35, 52 and 82 yards. He now has 13 touchdown receptions through six games, per MaxPreps, pushing his total in that category to 36 scores since the start of last season.
4-Star RB Noah Cain
7 of 8
Class: 2019
High School: Guyer (Denton, Texas)
Size: 5'11", 201 lbs
Composite Ranking: No. 1 running back; No. 5 overall
Recruitment Status: Offers include Arizona State, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and UCLA
Noah Cain has shown no signs of feeling pressure about his new label as top overall running back recruit in the 2019 class. The sophomore surged for 217 rushing yards on 25 carries Friday night, according to Brian Perroni of 247Sports.
Cain accounted for three touchdowns in a 34-24 win over Plano High School, delivering the type of performance that should make him the face of one of Texas' most recognizable programs for the remainder of his prep career. He emerged as a force during his freshman campaign, gaining 1,058 yards on the ground with 11 offensive touchdowns.
"Every single play before I carry the ball—even before any rankings came out—I've always told myself I'm the best," Cain told B/R earlier this month.
Unrated QB Hank Bachmeier
8 of 8Class: 2019
High School: Murrieta Valley (Murrieta, California)
Size: 6'2", 185 lbs
Composite Ranking: Ranking unavailable
Recruitment Status: Offers include Colorado
Expansive composite rankings aren't accessible quite yet for the 2019 recruiting class, but a 4-star designation from Scout presents realistic expectations for this young West Coast quarterback. Hank Bachmeier, who picked up a Pac-12 offer before the end of his freshman year, helped maintain Murrieta Valley's unbeaten record with a virtuoso effort against Oaks Christian High School.
He completed 18 of 24 throws for 408 yards and seven touchdowns (confirmed with B/R), adding 41 yards and another score on the ground. Bachmeier fired touchdown tosses of 14, 18, 22, 27, 28, 30 and 62 yards, besting 5-star 2018 USC quarterback commit Matt Corral (330 yards and two touchdowns) in a 70-62 shootout.
