Lamar Jackson vs. Marshall: Stats, Highlights and Twitter Reaction

Rob GoldbergSep 24, 2016

Louisville Cardinals Lamar Jackson's incredible season continued Saturday against Marshall with his second seven-touchdown performance of the year.

The Louisville quarterback had some resistance early but was still dominant in his team's 59-28 win over the Thundering Herd.

Although it's still only September, he likely remains the Heisman Trophy favorite thanks to these statistics through four games.

Mike Rutherford of Card Chronicle also reminds us that he hasn't even been playing full games:

According to ESPN Stats & Info, he has more touchdowns through four games than anyone since 2005.

Eric Bossi of Rivals.com summed things up:

Even in a blowout win, he is still worth keeping an eye on because you never know when he will do something special.

There was virtually no resistance for the opening touchdown, requiring just a flick of the wrist to complete a 71-yard touchdown pass to James Quick:

The problem comes from the fact fans have become accustomed to video-game numbers in every single game. When Jackson "struggles" early, it becomes news, per Bleacher Report:

Even when he continued to put his team in the end zone, there were still questions about his level of play, as noted by Michael Grant of The Comeback:

He did have an interception, a few missed targets and saw more pressure than we are used to seeing. Of course, any doubters were likely quieted by the end of the first half, when Jackson had four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

Jeff Greer of the Courier-Journal specifically praised the passing ability for a quarterback who has become more known for his running:

The second half featured more impressive throws, including this easy loft to Jaylen Smith for 51 yards:

John E. Hoover of TheFranchiseOK.com joked about a possible alternative to waiting until the end of the year to give Jackson the Heisman Trophy:

However, the star quarterback wasn't satisfied with the performance, according Greer:

Although Marshall scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the game mildly interesting late, it was never really in doubt as Louisville continued its impressive season.

The win showed that even when he isn't at his best, Jackson is still capable of putting together mind-blowing statistics.

There is obviously a lot of time remaining in the season as we haven't even reached October. We are only one-third of the way through the regular season, not to mention conference championships and bowl games.

With that said, it appears clear Jackson is the early leader to win the Heisman Trophy. If he can keep up these types of numbers for the rest of the year, the race won't even be close.
