Auburn Defeats LSU After Last-Second Touchdown Overturned
The LSU Tigers' second loss of the season came in devastating fashion after they thought they had scored the game-winning touchdown against the Auburn Tigers with no time remaining Saturday.
Trailing 18-13 with the ball on Auburn's 10-yard line with 10 seconds remaining, quarterback Danny Etling completed a pass to Travin Dural for eight yards. LSU was called for an illegal-shift penalty, however, bringing the ball back to the 15-yard line with one second remaining.
After rushing to the line to try to get the snap off before the clock ticked down to zero, Etling appeared to hit D.J. Chark for a touchdown and a 19-18 win.
Upon review, however, the officials determined LSU did not get the snap off before time expired.
The finish was a shocking scene, with one team's heartache being transferred to the other sideline after the official review.
USA Today's Nicole Auerbach had some fun at the expense of both teams after the ugly contest came to a close:
Auburn never found the end zone, getting 18 points on six Daniel Carlson field goals. LSU scored the only touchdown of the game with less than three minutes left in the first quarter.
ESPN's Freddie Coleman tried to capture LSU fans' emotions after everything fell apart at the end:
Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports took a proactive approach with his criticism of LSU:
While some thought the game should have ended following LSU's penalty, Fox Sports' Mike Pereira explained why the 10-second runoff did not apply in that situation:
Jordan-Hare Stadium has been the host to some wild endings in recent past, including the last-second Kick-Six that that gave Auburn a win over Alabama three years ago.
While Saturday's ending didn't match Chris Davis' 109-yard return that sent Auburn to the SEC title game, it was one of the most unusual endings to a football game in 2016.
