NCAA Football Rankings 2016: Analyzing Week 3 Polls and Top 25 College Standings

Steve SilvermanSep 12, 2016

So far, no surprises at the No. 1 spot in the Top 25 college football standings, because Alabama remains No. 1 in both the AP and Amway Coaches polls.

However, Clemson fell three spots in the AP poll but just one spot in the coaches poll after an uninspired performance in Week 2. The Tigers defeated Troy by a 30-24 margin, and the close nature of that victory cost them in a big way in terms of perception.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson threw three touchdown passes in the win, but he explained that not every victory can be a masterpiece.

"Everybody wants to see us score 50 points, 60 points and everybody wants it now," Watson told the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com). "We're not going to do that. First we've got to execute and find our rhythm."

Florida State moved up to the No. 2 spot in both polls, and the Seminoles are coming off an overpowering 52-8 victory over Charleston Southern. Ohio State and Michigan follow in the AP poll at the third and fourth spots, respectively, while Clemson is third in the coaches poll with the same two Big Ten teams following in that order.

Louisville was the biggest mover in the Week 3 poll, as it went up five spots in the coaches poll and three spots in the AP poll. The Cardinals had a huge night when they went on the road Friday at Syracuse and pummeled the Orange by a 62-28 margin.

Louisville is ranked 10th in both polls as a result of that jump in the standings.

Alabama did not have the same kind of impact victory that it did in Week 1 against USC, but there were no major weaknesses revealed in the Crimson Tide's 38-10 victory over Western Kentucky.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts had his second consecutive fine game for Alabama. He completed 23 of 36 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, wideout Calvin Ridley had an outstanding game, catching nine passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.

The Alabama quarterback's play has impressed college football experts, such as ESPN's Tom Luginbill:

Florida State has to feel good about itself after its victory over Charleston Southern. Freshman quarterback Deondre Francois appears to be a coming star as he completed 25 of 32 passes for 262 yards with three TDs. He has a superior connection with wideout Travis Rudolph, who caught seven passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Michigan was one of the most hyped teams in the nation at the start of the season under head coach Jim Harbaugh, and the Wolverines pulled off their second consecutive blowout in a 51-14 victory over Central Florida. Quarterback Wilton Speight will get tested as the season moves along, but he looks like a worthy No. 1 signal-caller.

Speight threw for 312 yards and four TD passes against UCF.
