Ventura College quarterback Jake Luton called Schirmer's punch "terrible" and said, "There's no place for that in football."
According to Curley, the referee didn't return to the game, and Ventura College head coach Steve Mooshagian said the referee "looked like he was a little drowsy" as he left the field.
Schirmer, a freshman from Long Beach, California, could face a five-year ban for his actions.
