Lionel Messi's delightful chip to conclude a wonderful Barcelona move against AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League last year has been voted as the UEFA Goal of the Season.

Ricardinho's goal for Portugal in the UEFA Euro 2016 Futsal tournament was in second place with 13 per cent, while Xherdan Shaqiri's stunning overhead kick for Switzerland against Poland at the 2016 UEFA European Championship took 11 per cent of the vote and third position.

Messi's goal was one of six scored by Barcelona on the night, as they hammered the Italian side 6-1.

Indeed, so good were the Blaugrana that evening, Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny hailed the display as "beautiful to watch" despite having to pick the ball out of his net half a dozen times, per Will Magee of the Daily Mirror.

Having hammered Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium just days before, it was a goal that epitomised a Barcelona side that were in a frightening attacking groove at the time.

It was Messi's first start for the Blaugrana in two months following an injury layoff, too, and another resounding indicator of the forward's unwavering class.
