Preseason College Football Rankings 2016: Twitter Reacts to AP NCAA Top 25 Poll

Adam WellsAug 21, 2016

Two weeks after the Amway Coaches Poll was unveiled, the Associated Press released its Top 25 for the 2016 college football season with Alabama and Clemson in the top two spots.

Not surprisingly, the two lists feature a lot of overlap. The top four teams have the same ranking, with the rest of the top 10 featuring the same teams in a slightly different order.

The biggest takeaway from the Top 25 is the lack of consensus among the voters when it comes to figuring out which team is the best entering the season. Pick Six Previews has the information:

Alabama is still the top choice, but there are more options in college football this season. It also helps that the Crimson Tide enter the season with an uncertain quarterback situation, which will put more pressure on Nick Saban's loaded defense to dominate more than it normally does.

Adam Jacobi did have some fun with all the love given to Alabama every year in the preseason polls:

Yet as ESPN Stats & Info pointed out, the Crimson Tide have been a model of consistency in college football for nearly a decade:

There is some bad news for Alabama if you believe in trends. ESPN Stats & Info noted the last preseason No. 1 team in the AP poll to finish in that spot was USC in 2004.

Since not everything has to be about Alabama all the time, let's look down the Top 25 for more noteworthy information.

ESPN Stats & Info offered a nugget about Notre Dame's high placement in the rankings:

One of Notre Dame's longtime rivals, Michigan, is generating a lot of buzz heading into Jim Harbaugh's second season as head coach and coming off a 10-win season in 2015.

The Wolverines got one first-place vote, but Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press did bring back an unfortunate memory for the football program:

In case you forgot, Appalachian State stunned Michigan in the 2007 season opener. The schedule sets up nicely early for the Wolverines, who play five straight home games to start. They will be tested late with road games against conference rivals Michigan State, Iowa and Ohio State.

Sticking with schedules and the Big Ten, albeit with an unranked team, Benjamin Worgull of Scout.com highlighted Wisconsin's brutal slate this season:

Right now, the preseason polls are a way to whet the appetite for anxious fans who are tired of waiting for August 27, when Hawaii and California start the season from Australia.

These lists are fun to talk about, but there is going to be so much turnover between now and Championship Saturday on December 3. Alabama and Clemson are the favorites right now, but no one would be too surprised if those teams missed out on the College Football Playoff.
