La Liga Table 2016 Week 1: Opening Standings Following Friday's Results

James DudkoAug 19, 2016

Osasuna snatched a point late on by earning a 1-1 draw in Malaga, while Deportivo La Coruna also left it late to beat Eibar, 2-1, at home as the new La Liga season got underway.

The initial results put Depor temporarily on top before the big guns play over the rest of the weekend. It's a moment fans of the club should savour because it's unlikely to last.

Still, here's what the table looks like after the season's opening matches:

Recap

Former Arsenal man Fran Merida collected a debut goal five minutes from time to give Osasuna a point at La Rosaleda. It was a smash-and-grab finish very much against the run of play.

Malaga had dominated, with the only surprise being it took nearly an hour for Juanpi to open the scoring. The home side's pressure barely let up after taking the lead, with striker Charles particularly a handful.

Midfield duo Recio and Ignacio Camacho broke up play and bossed possession, with the former showing more creative verve. However, the failure to build on their advantage ultimately cost Malaga when Merida pounced.

Football Radar writer Chris Henson bemoaned a lack of quality from both sides but naturally pointed to one team with the right to be happier with their night's work:

A draw wasn't ideal, but as OptaJose pointed out, Malaga did at least maintain a fine run in home league openers:

Star striker Lucas Perez spared Depor's blushes when he struck from the spot with three minutes left to beat Eibar. He'd won the foul after a clumsy tackle from David Junca and made no mistake with his trusty left boot.

Midfielder Pedro Mosquera has started the Deportivo fight back when he cancelled out Eibar centre-back Ivan Ramis' opener. The visitors naturally seemed to struggle without last season's top scorer, Borja Baston, the Atletico Madrid loanee whom the club sold to Premier League side Swansea City this summer.

None of the quartet in action on the opening night are likely to be pushing for UEFA Champions League places. Still, they each have some useful players, not least the prolific Perez for Deportivo.

However, the main attention will focus on the usual suspects, with Barcelona set to begin their title defence at home to Real Betis.
