Premier League Table: Final Week 1 2016 Standings, Results and Week 2 Fixtures

James DudkoAug 15, 2016

Diego Costa ensured Antonio Conte enjoyed a winning start as new Chelsea manager by scoring late to help the Blues beat West Ham United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Monday. Costa's quality effort cancelled out James Collins' excellent equaliser for the Hammers, who had fallen behind to an Eden Hazard penalty.

Three points for Chelsea has put them third behind Manchester United and Liverpool and also wrapped up an eventful first week of the new Premier League season. It featured wins for Jose Mourinho's United and Pep Guardiola in his debut with Manchester City.

However, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is once again feeling the pressure after losing a seven-goal thriller to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

Recap

There weren't many positives for Conte, despite the three points. Yet he will have been pleased perhaps more by Eden Hazard's tantalising performance than his team's battling display.

The Belgian winger looked reinvigorated following a tame effort last season. He ran the West Ham defence ragged, a fact best summed up by this number provided by Squawka:

For all Hazard's endeavour, though, Chelsea lacked fluency for large portions of the game. In particular, the pace of play was generally pedestrian, and there was little cohesion in their passing.

ESPN's Miguel Delaney felt that an imbalance in the new-look N'Golo Kante-led midfield didn't help:

Despite their own issues, the Blues were fortunate the Hammers were so off-key in the final third. A side ostensibly packed with flair failed to muster much until manager Slaven Bilic finally introduced Dimitri Payet to the fray.

His impact was soon obvious, according to Squawka:

In the end, Chelsea had just done enough to get this London derby over the line. Yet Conte is sure to expect more vibrancy and pace from his side when they travel to Watford next week.

He'll be pitting wits with another former Serie A strategist in the form of Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri. Conte will need more magic from Hazard to unlock what's sure to be a stubborn rearguard action.

The rest of the week's fixtures are highlighted by Arsenal's attempts to bounce back at the home of Leicester City. Last season's champions were beaten on opening day but have more resources to call on than a threadbare Gunners squad, wounded both emotionally and physically.

In particular, Wenger must find more credible solutions in defence where injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel have undermined Arsenal's start to the season.
