2016 Barclays Premier League 2: Monday U23 Results, Updated Table and Schedule

James DudkoAug 15, 2016

Demetri Mitchell scored three minutes from time to give Manchester United a 1-0 win over Leicester City at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium in the Barclays Premier League 2 U23 Division One on Monday.

The substitute's late strike undid a Foxes team whose greater experience had proved too savvy and stubborn for a United squad littered with academy prospects hoping to come to the attention of senior manager Jose Mourinho.

While United stuttered in front of goal, neighbours Manchester City scored three times to wipe out a two-goal deficit and stun Derby County.

Recap

United academy boss Warren Joyce opted for a few familiar names in his starting XI, including defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson. Meanwhile, the Foxes fielded several senior options, with veteran Swiss central midfielder Gokhan Inler getting a chance to prove his fitness and worth in the post-N'Golo Kante era.

Polish winger Bartosz Kapustka and former United prospect Ritchie De Laet were also in the Leicester lineup, per Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News:

The more established quality in their ranks helped the Foxes show more composure on the ball and more creativity in their passing. It meant United's defenders were called into action early and often, giving players such as 18-year-old Axel Tuanzebe plenty of opportunities to showcase their talent and potential.

Mitchell broke the deadlock when he met a thunderous kick from goalkeeper Samuel Johnstone. His cool lobbed finish showed the skill under pressure the 19-year-old can muster.

Here's a look at the aforementioned strike, per United's Twitter feed:

Billy O'Brien opened the scoring for the Rams, who needed just 15 minutes to move into the lead against City. Charles Vernam doubled that advantage when he profited from an underhit pass among City's defenders.

Lukas Nmecha halved the deficit just after the hour mark, less than 10 minutes after O'Brien had seen his penalty saved. Nmecha later assisted with a sly pass to Aaron Nemane who equalised.

Nmecha soon grabbed the third when he prodded home from close range, as City's quality in the final third began to tell.

Villa's seniors are already experiencing a tough start to life in the Championship, and things haven't gone much better for the U23 side. Wolves snatched all three points late at Bodymoor Heath when Morgan Gibbs-White slid in a neat finish.

He and Niall Ennis gave an experienced Villa back line featuring former Wolves ace Joleon Lescott a ton of problems. Afterward, Ennis expressed his delight at having made such a significant contribution:

A brace from attacking midfielder Haris Vuckic sent Newcastle on their way to an excellent first win of the season. The young Magpies also scored through Gael Bigirimana, as they dominated Norwich.
