Sevilla vs. Barcelona: Score, Reaction from 2016 Spanish Super Cup Leg 1

Rory MarsdenAug 14, 2016

Luis Suarez and Munir El Haddadi netted second-half goals to earn Barcelona a 2-0 win over hosts Sevilla in the opening leg of the 2016 Spanish Super Cup at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday.

Barca were under a lot of pressure in the first half, but Sevilla could not make their possession and opportunities count.

Suarez pounced early in the second half to open the scoring, and Munir doubled Barcelona's lead nine minutes from time.

They will take the two-goal lead back to the Camp Nou and hope to seal victory in the second leg on Wednesday.

Marca provided both lineups ahead of kick-off:

Sevilla were the more impressive side in the opening half as they consistently got behind Barca's defence on both flanks, with manager Luis Enrique's men looking sluggish.

They couldn't find an opening goal, though, despite a number of decent chances.

Suarez had the best early chance but could not beat Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico after receiving an excellent ball from Sergio Busquets in the seventh minute.

The Spanish champions were mainly on the back foot in the opening 45 minutes, though, as Sevilla forced a string of corners, and Javier Mascherano had to make a crucial block on Vitolo in the 17th minute.

The Spanish winger had a number of decent opportunities both in front of goal and to release his team-mates on the Barca defence, but nothing came of them.

Sevilla were wasteful with their corners as well, but new manager Jorge Sampaoli had cause for optimism at half-time, per Spanish football writer Andy West:

They paid for their wastefulness nine minutes after the break, when Suarez finished a flowing move for Barcelona.

Denis Suarez clipped the ball to Arda Turan in the box, and the Turkey international brilliantly chested it down for the onrushing Luis Suarez to sweep home from 15 yards.

Per Squawka, the Uruguayan picked up where he left off last season:

Barca almost went up 2-0 minutes later, but Messi's attempted loft over the goalkeeper was held by Rico.

The Catalan giants began to dominate the proceedings after their opener, and Sergi Roberto forced Rico to save another shot 25 minutes from time.

Sevilla pushed forward for an equaliser but barely troubled the visitors, and Munir extended Barca's lead with his first touch of the game, having replaced Turan minutes before.

He picked up a fine ball from Messi and drove at the goal in the 81st minute before touching a deft finish with the outside of his left boot past Rico and into the corner.

It was a hammer blow for Sevilla, per the Mirror's Ed Malyon:

The hosts tried to limit the damage in the dying moments, but they have a huge challenge on their hands to turn things around in the second leg and will rue not capitalising on their first-half superiority on Sunday.

Post-Match Reaction

Suarez tweeted out congratulations to his team-mates after their victory and indicated Barca now needed to focus on the second leg:

Meanwhile, Enrique praised his opposite number Sampaoli and confirmed his eagerness to win the Super Cup, per Barcelona: "I like Sampaoli's style, it's attacking and I like to attack. We are excited about winning this trophy and we have to keep winning."
