Last year's champions lost, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho won and flawed Arsenal and Liverpool sides combined for seven goals in the weekend's premier matchup.

Suffice to say, the opening weekend of the Premier League season didn't disappoint.

Below, we'll break down the table after Matchday 1 and Sunday's results, and take a look back at a wild weekend of action.

HULL, ENGLAND - AUGUST 13: Jamie Vardy of Leicester City and Claudio Ranieri, Manager of Leicester City talk on the touchline during the Premier League match between Hull City and Leicester City at KCOM Stadium on August 13, 2016 in Hull, England. (Photo

Leicester City opened their title defense with a shocking 2-1 loss at Hull City, a result that few would have seen coming after the club's brilliance a year ago.

After losing all of three games last year—but also losing N'Golo Kante to Chelsea—there will now be questions whether Leicester can come anywhere close to matching last year's form, or if they simply caught lightning in a bottle.

"They were smarter than us," manager Claudio Ranieri conceded, per the AFP (via Fox Sports). "We made little mistakes when we lost the ball. We got nervous. We want to draw, and Hull played very, very close. We made a big effort, but individual effort, not like a team. Our strength is when everybody is connected.”

Manchester United looked pretty smart in their opening win under Mourinho, highlighted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic's first Premier League goal. Miguel Delaney of ESPN FC broke down the win and the club's new striker:

While two of the club's goals in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth were a bit fortuitous, United also looked incredibly dangerous, and that was with Henrikh Mkhitaryan coming off the bench and Paul Pogba not yet on the squad.

The Red Devils are loaded, and what is more scary for the rest of the Premier League is that they look organized and confident under Mourinho. The first chapter of the Mourinho Era was certainly a page-turner.

Manchester City didn't look quite so convincing in their 2-1 victory over Sunderland, but Guardiola will certainly take the result, especially without the availability of Vincent Kompany, Samir Nasri, Nicolas Otamendi, Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan (and Yaya Toure and Joe Hart being left out of the first team).

Both Manchester clubs have the managers and players to compete for a title this season. Liverpool and Arsenal will have questions about their title chances after Sunday, however.

The Gunners were a mess defensively, though that was in large part to the team being forced to start Calum Chambers and Rob Holding at centre-back with injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel, while Laurent Koscielny wasn't quite fit after his post-Euros layover.

The loss is sure to leave manager Arsene Wenger in hot water with many Arsenal supporters once again, especially after a summer that only saw one premier signing by the team, Granit Xhaka, who didn't even start on Sunday.

“We are working very hard to still get one or two players in," Wenger said after the match, per Arseblog. "There’s not much time left. It has to make sense and add quality."

But that sounds like a familiar story to many supporters, per John Brewin of ESPN FC:

Take nothing away from Liverpool. Philippe Coutinho scored two fantastic goals and the Reds earned a crucial away victory without Daniel Sturridge (recovering from a hip injury). The defense is still a worry, but the Reds are going to be a constant threat going forward.

On a weekend when many of the title threats this season took home three points, last season's top three finishers—Leicester, Arsenal and Tottenham—combined for just one. Tottenham, at least, earned a point in a tough away draw at Goodison Park.

Too much shouldn't be read into one game in a 38-game season. That won't keep Leicester fans from wondering if last year's magic won't be carried into next season and Arsenal fans from lamenting, once again, Wenger's inactivity on the transfer market.

In that regard, the more things change, the more they remain the same.
