Jamyest Williams Sets Decision Date: Odds on Where 4-Star Commits
The finish line in the recruitment of 4-star corner Jamyest Williams is set as he announced that he will make his commitment on Aug. 27.
In July at The Opening, Williams announced a top five that included heavyweights Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Though all five schools remain in contention heading into his announcement, he’s likely to choose between the Bulldogs, Buckeyes and Gamecocks.
Regardless of where he lands, the nation’s No. 8 corner and the No. 57 player in the 2017 class will bring a fearless attitude and a work ethic that has fueled his rise into a prospect with nearly 50 offers heading into his senior season.
As his announcement nears, which program has the best chance to land the electric Peach State standout?
Let’s take a look at the odds for each of his finalists.
Ohio State: 15-1
Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has cemented his reputation as one of the nation’s premier recruiters, as evidenced by the top-rated 2017 class he and his staff have assembled to date.
Williams visited Columbus last November for a game, and he most recently set foot on the Buckeyes campus back in May.
One thing that could work against the Buckeyes is the fact that they already have four defensive backs currently committed—including three corners.
Still, Williams is a versatile player who could play different positions in the secondary and on special teams—which makes him an intriguing option for Meyer and his staff.
However, while it’s silly to count out Meyer and Co., it appears as if the Buckeyes have the least amount of momentum with Williams heading into his announcement.
Georgia: 8-1
Ever since Kirby Smart took over as head coach, the homestanding Georgia Bulldogs have placed an emphasis on luring the state’s top talents to Athens.
He’s been no stranger to Athens having visited Georgia’s campus numerous times over the last year.
According to Kipp Adams of Dawgs247, Williams will try to fit in another trip to Athens ahead of his announcement.
Last month at The Opening, Williams said the thought of staying close to home for college appeals to him. However, he’s open to leaving the state if he feels a better fit elsewhere.
“[Top recruits from the state of Georgia] can stay home and change the game, but sometimes you have to make a selfish decision because the fit might not be the best one for you,” Williams told Bleacher Report. “Georgia is a great fit, and there’s still a possibility I could go there, but the decision will be based on what’s best for me.”
Assuming he makes a final trip to Athens, the Bulldogs have an opportunity to leave a final impression—which could swing the pendulum in Williams' recruitment toward him landing with the Bulldogs.
South Carolina: 5-1
The team with the most momentum heading into his decision is the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Landing an elite talent such as Williams would be a major coup for new Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp and his staff, who have made him a top priority in recent months.
At The Opening, when he was asked which teams were coming after him the hardest, Williams was blunt with just one program popping into his mind.
“South Carolina,” he said.
As Brad Crawford of 247Sports detailed, a combination of early playing time and a strong bond with defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson have Williams feeling comfortable with the idea of heading to Columbia for college.
As things currently stand, the Gamecocks are the last program to get him on campus, as he visited there late last month.
Williams noted that his decision will come down to a few important factors.
“It’s probably going to be the environment and the academic life," Williams said. "I know the football part will come. All the schools have good coaches. It’s mainly just the life away from football and the school’s relationship with my parents."
With his announcement nearing, the Gamecocks are in prime position to land one of the nation’s premier skill players in the 2017 cycle.
