Art Briles Comments on Firing from Baylor, Job Hunt and More

Joe PantornoAug 9, 2016

Former Baylor head coach Art Briles has been out of a job since being fired May 26 as the school underwent investigations for its handling of rape allegations involving football players.

On Tuesday, Briles finally broke his silence about his dismissal from the school, saying he was "dumbfounded" at the university's decision to let him go, per Bleacher Report's Jason King.

After his firing, Briles accused the school of wrongful termination in June, with Jim Vertuno of the Associated Press reporting he had "no interest in settling a federal lawsuit filed against him and the university by a woman who was raped by a football player."

He was the only coach from Baylor's staff from last year who was fired, as his son, Kendal Briles, and son-in-law, Jeff Lebby, remain assistants under interim head coach Jim Grobe.

Amid the scandal, Briles claimed he should be able to find another gig as he looks to start a new chapter in his football coaching career, per Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News: "I know who I am. I've always lived my life in a righteous manner."

Briles hopes to get a job by November or December, which will give him an opportunity to carry over what he learned from his experience at Baylor, per Hairopoulos: "[I'm] going to make sure to have policies in place that are protective of everybody, students first and foremost."

Regardless of the fashion of his exit, he doesn't carry any ill will against the coaches and staff who are still in Waco, Texas, per Hairopoulos: "They'll coach [their] tails off. They'll love those kids and coach hard for Baylor."

He added that Grobe is "a great guy" and that the state of the football program is "a perfect situation" to come in to, per Hairopoulos.

Briles went 65-37 in eight years at Baylor, lifting the program to new heights. The Bears appeared in six straight bowl games, including a stretch from 2013 to 2015 during which they went a combined 32-7.

However, off-field issues brought his tenure to a quick and unexpected end. He's now attempting to lay down roots with a new program and, more importantly, help run a clean ship.
