Pele Won't Attend 2016 Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony Due to Health Concerns
Football legend Pele will not attend the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Friday as the 75-year-old is reportedly struggling with his health.
Associated Press Sports confirmed the news:
The three-time World Cup winner was one of the favourites to carry the torch into Rio's iconic Maracana Stadium and light the cauldron, but his presence became doubtful when he told reporters "business deals" might prevent him from attending, per the Associated Press.
Per the AP, Pele released a short statement: "I'm not physically able to attend the opening of the Olympics. ... Only God is more important than my health. In my life, I've had fractures, surgeries, pain, hospital stays, victories and defeats. And I've always respected those who admire me. ... As a Brazilian, I ask God to bless all who participate in this event."
Event organisers have done their very best to keep the opening ceremony shrouded in mystery, and so far, they've been successful. That Pele would light the cauldron was the only near-certainty fans had, if he could make it, and with his absence now confirmed, even that has become a question mark.
It's unclear whether or not the organisers have a backup plan, and as shared by BBC Breaking News, time is running out:
The opening ceremony will start at 7 p.m. ET (midnight BST) and will be broadcast live on BBC One. NBC will tape-delay the broadcast, starting at 8 p.m. ET.
