Leicester vs. Manchester United: Jose Mourinho's Community Shield Presser Quotes

Christopher SimpsonAug 5, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho appeared to suggest there will be no room for Bastian Schweinsteiger in his squad for the upcoming season but confirmed he is targeting another midfielder amid speculation linking United with Paul Pogba.

Per Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, the Special One was asked about Schweinsteiger's future as he addressed the media ahead of United's Community Shield match with Leicester City on Sunday:

According to Rob Dawson and Luckhurst for the Mirror, he added:

"

I normally like to work with 20 players plus the three goalkeepers, which is what I do for 15 years because we have so many players, but at the same time we also have so many competitions and especially the Europa League is a competition that changes a lot of the season. You can play 15 matches, you play on the Thursday, you have a big risk, travel a lot.

Normally you are going to play the Premier League on the Sunday so I made the decision to be with 23 players plus three goalkeepers, which I think is still a lot and I had to make my decisions.

"

The Portuguese reiterated he would be pursuing another major addition to his squad this summer, though, per Metro's Chris Winterburn:

However, he would not be drawn on whether the man in question would be Juventus star Pogba:

Per Dawson and Luckhurst, he added: "We are going to get a very good midfield player, so I am happy with the balance of my squad."

He also aimed a barb at Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after their comments on the fee Pogba could command, which Michael Kelleher of Sky Sports reported could exceed £100 million:

According to the Red Devils' official Twitter account, Mourinho took the time to praise summer signing Eric Bailly—which Winterburn believed to be significant along with his discussion of Pogba:

Mourinho also spoke of his attempts to change the team's mindset after two seasons under Louis van Gaal:

"

My teams are different than Mr Van Gaal’s.

It’s a difficult situation to change the dynamicsit would be easier for me to have 20 new players and start from zero. After two years of work, there are things in their brains that are automatic.

That’s difficult to change, but we are working hard and the players are giving everything to adapt. Step by step, my team is going to be my team.

"

The 53-year-old does indeed face a difficult task as he attempts to restore the confidence and winning mentality that seem to have abandoned the squad following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

His captures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan—along with bringing his inimitable approach to managing the team—should go some way to doing that, as would the signing of Pogba.

As for Sunday, the showpiece curtain-raiser between the FA Cup winners and the Premier League champions promises to be an intriguing matchup and a useful indicator of where both teams are at ahead of the new season.
