Daylon Charlot to Kansas: Latest Transfer Details, Comments and Reaction
Wide receiver Daylon Charlot announced Thursday night he's transferring from the Alabama Crimson Tide to the Kansas Jayhawks:
Charlot caught two passes for nine yards in his freshman season with the Crimson Tide. He likely feels he'll have an easier road to the first team in Lawrence, Kansas. College football writer Matt Hinton noted Alabama is flush with talented pass-catchers, including Calvin Ridley, Robert Foster and ArDarius Stewart:
"Daylon made really good progress here," Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said, per AL.com's Michael Casagrande. "I just wish he would have had a little more patience to hang in there, and I think he would have been a great contributor here, and I think he'll have a good career wherever he chooses to go."
The move will be a big culture shock for the sophomore. He won a national title in his only season with Alabama, and now he's moving to a school that went 0-12 in 2015 and hasn't had a winning season since 2008.
According to 247Sports' composite rankings, Charlot was the ninth-best wideout in the 2015 recruiting class and the 90th-best player overall.
The transfer is a major coup for the Jayhawks, even though Charlot will have to sit out the 2016 season. Going back to 2000, Keeston Terry is the best WR recruit to join Kansas, per 247Sports. Terry ranked 66th at his position in 2010.
Jayhawks head coach David Beaty is building a strong passing game around sophomore wideouts Steven Sims Jr. and Jeremiah Booker. Junior LaQuvionte Gonzalez will also play after sitting out the requisite one year following his transfer from the Texas A&M Aggies.
Kansas has a long way to go to reach the success it attained during the Mark Mangino era. Securing the transfer of a player like Charlot may signify that Beaty is on the way toward rebuilding the program, though.
