Rami Hammad Arrested on Stalking Charge: Latest Details, Reaction on Baylor OL

Mike ChiariAug 2, 2016

Baylor offensive lineman Rami Hammad was arrested Aug. 1 and charged with third-degree felony stalking for an alleged incident involving his ex-girlfriend.

According to Kristin Hoppa of the Waco Tribune-Herald, police said Hammad's ex-girlfriend and a professor called 911 because they feared for their safety. Hammad had waited for his ex-girlfriend outside a classroom July 7 and then followed her and the professor to the professor's office, where Hammad repeatedly knocked on the door.

Hammad was suspended from team activities Monday, per Hoppa. He told police he went to his ex-girlfriend's class to check on her after finding her apartment empty.

Nick Canizales of KCEN News provided a statement from Baylor on Hammad's incident:

According to Hoppa, the arrest affidavit stated, "Hammad advised after an unsuccessful search, he knew she would have to attend class the next morning and found her walking into class. Hammad advised he just wanted to talk to the victim in an attempt to mend their troubled relationship."

Hammad's ex-girlfriend told police she went to great lengths to avoid Hammad and that she moved to another state because she wasn't comfortable living in Waco, Texas. She also alleged he physically abused her in separate incidents in March and June.

On Thursday, Paula Lavigne of ESPN.com reported Hammad had faced sexual assault and violating a no-contact order charges from last fall:

"

Last fall, a different woman reported to Baylor's Title IX office that she had been sexually assaulted by Hammad. After Hammad confronted the woman about why he was under investigation by the Title IX office, she requested a no-contact order from the university, according to documents reviewed by Outside the Lines. She received it, but three days later, Hammad allegedly confronted her again. She and two witnesses reported that confrontation to police, but she declined to press charges, believing the Title IX office would pursue the matter, she told Outside the Lines.

"

Hammad is set to enter his junior year after transferring to Baylor from Texas following the 2013 campaign.

The 21-year-old Irving, Texas, native "was released from jail Tuesday afternoon on a $5,000 surety bond," per Hoppa.
