Treon Harris: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation Surrounding Transfer

The University of Florida on Monday confirmed quarterback-turned-wide receiver Treon Harris intended to transfer, and schools are reportedly already lining up to secure the former signal-caller's commitment after he parted ways with the Gators.

Harris Hopes to Make a Decision in August

According to 247Sports.com's Ryan Bartow, "Southern Miss, Texas State and Georgia State have all spoken to Harris’ family. Several FCS programs including Florida A&M, Howard and Hampton have also made contact."

Bartow also cited sources who said Minnesota, Kansas, SMU and East Carolina are among the other schools doing their homework on Harris.  

After tallying 1,019 yards and nine touchdowns through the air as a freshman, Harris completed 50.6 percent of his passes for 1,676 yards and nine scores in 11 appearances with the Gators last season. 

However, head coach Jim McElwain attempted to move Harris to wide receiver before spring practices, which seemed to precipitate the former signal-caller's request for a transfer. 

According to Bartow, Harris has positional possibilities depending on where he lands. Specifically, the 5'11", 195-pounder could reportedly play quarterback, wideout or safety. 

As a standout at Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, Harris emerged as the ninth-ranked athlete in the class of 2014 and the 123rd-ranked player in the nation. He was also the 18th-ranked player in the state of Florida among recruits in his class. 

When it comes to weighing his options, Harris will need to determine how much he values playing for a big program compared to how much he values accruing playing time.

Harris will be forced to sit out this fall if he transfers to a Division I program. Conversely, transferring to an FCS school would allow Harris to suit up immediately. 

According to Bartow, "Harris and his family plan to gauge all of the programs who have serious interest by Monday, then set up a visit or two with the goal being Harris enrolling in August."
