Treon Harris to Transfer from Florida: Latest Comments and Reaction

Tyler ConwayJul 25, 2016

After two disappointing seasons, quarterback Treon Harris will transfer from the University of Florida, the school confirmed Monday.

Harris, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, threw for 1,676 yards and nine touchdowns against six interceptions last season. He lost the starting job to Will Grier and was reportedly planning a switch to wide receiver in 2016, per Mike Huguenin of Gridiron Now.

Grier, who was issued an NCAA suspension last October, has since transferred to West Virginia. Florida will likely choose between transfers Luke Del Rio and Austin Appleby for its starting quarterback job this season. Freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask could also be in the mix.

Harris arrived in Gainesville as a touted dual-threat quarterback out of Booker T. Washington High School in Miami. He injected life into the offense as a freshman, throwing for nine touchdowns against four picks and adding a flair on the ground. While his consistency as a passer wasn't great, Harris' propensity for big plays created big expectations heading into 2015.

They never came to fruition. He lost out to Grier in a quarterback battle and only wound up taking over when Grier was issued his suspension. Florida made it to the SEC Championship Game almost entirely on the back of its defense, and Harris was suspended in March for an undisclosed reason.

If he chooses to transfer to another FBS school, Harris will have to sit out the 2016 season. He has not used his redshirt, so he will have two years of eligibility remaining regardless.

It's an inauspicious end to a career that looked promising just two years ago. When the Gators landed Grier and Harris, it seemed like they'd have a difficult time choosing between two potential superstars. Now, both are gone, leaving head coach Jim McElwain with even bigger offensive question marks in 2016.

Del Rio threw just 18 career passes at Oregon State before transferring. Appleby has thrown as many touchdowns as interceptions (19) in his career and couldn't keep his job at Purdue. It's not exactly an ideal situation if McElwain hopes to repeat as SEC East champs.
