USA vs. Costa Rica Women's Soccer: Date, Time, Live Stream for 2016 Friendly

Tom SunderlandJul 22, 2016

The United States women's national team will face Costa Rica in Kansas this Friday hoping they can put the finishing touches on what's already been a promising run-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Head coach Jill Ellis' side are unbeaten in their last 13 matches and come up against an opponent that's managed to win just two of its last six fixtures and hasn't tasted victory in its three previous outings.

As a result, the Stars and Stripes will assuredly utilize Friday's friendly as a last opportunity to test out some of their less seasoned figures, with youngsters Mallory Pugh, Morgan Brian and Lindsey Horan in the frame to start.

Jill Ellis Already Looking Beyond Rio

While this summer's Olympic Games may be the most immediate concern for the United States, Ellis has shown she's already fixated on developing a squad beyond the 2016 showcase.

The United States coach appeared in front of the media this week, and Philly Sports writer Jonathan Tannenwald provided quotes as Ellis confirmed the next generation of stars is also a chief priority:

The likes of Abby Wambach and Christie Rampone may no longer be present, but as Goal's Thomas Floyd recently illustrated, the Stars and Stripes' expected Rio 2016 squad is still packed to the brim with talent:

Costa Rica narrowly missed out of qualification for this year's Olympics and may not present as great a task as anything the United States are likely to meet in Brazil, especially after winning just twice in 2016.

That being said, Ellis' less prominent assets will be sure to pounce on any opportunity they're handed in Kansas come Friday, posing a last chance to make a grand impression before boarding the plane to Rio.

Young and Old Mixture Promises Big Results

Mallory Pugh, 18, is the youngest player in Ellis' Olympics squad.

Another aspect of building the new dynasty of United States superstars is finding that perfect blend of wizened veterans, young, excitable prospects and undoubtedly those players in their prime.

Ellis certainly has plenty of the latter, with 11 of the 18 included in the Rio squad aged between 27 and 31—the standard range for a player's prime—but 223-times capped Carli Lloyd, 34, is as motivated as any youngster:

At the other end of the scale comes the likes of 18-year-old Pugh, the youngest player in Ellis' squad by a margin of some four years, and ESPN's Julie Foudy recently spoke highly of her rising star:

The aforementioned duo of Horan, 22, and Brian, 23, the latter of whom already has 53 caps for the national team, are also among those looking to establish themselves further in the United States camp.

Captain Becky Sauerbrunn, Ali Krieger and Megan Rapinoe, all 31 years of age, will be among those expected to help usher in the youngsters in a bid to breed a new generation as successful as the current world champions.
