NBA Rumors: Latest Developments in Celtics' Trade Search and More

Chris RolingJul 17, 2016

The NBA rumor mill is still offering plenty for league gurus who are wondering which players might sneak onto rosters and fans who are glancing every now and then, hoping for a major splash.

Kevin Durant made his anticipated decision July 4, and other major dominoes fell shortly after. But the Association isn't done offering up interesting nuggets yet.

With camps to run, free-agent deals going final and even potential major trades waiting to happen (especially for one team with a large stockpile of assets), folks won't want to start looking into NFL training camps just yet.

Here's a look at the notable rumors making the rounds.

Boston's Pursuit of Major Names

The Boston Celtics would be the team in the intro, not that anyone even vaguely familiar with the Association needed more than two guesses.

Team president Danny Ainge has not only assembled a young roster that made the playoffs last season, but he also has the front office sitting on a stockpile of picks and managed to lure former Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford to town in free agency.

If Ainge had his way, he would have perhaps made a huge splash during the draft, too. The Boston Herald's Steve Bulpett revealed Ainge was in discussions to swing a deal, but ultimately other parties wanted more than he was willing to surrender. Bulpett's sources provided more details:

"

Another sticking point in that and in other deals Boston is talking about is that pick from the Nets next year. Danny will make it available in the right situation, but he’s not going to give it up with core players, too. That’s going to be a good draft, and that’s going to be a high pick.

Everyone’s been talking about how Danny’s trying to make a killing out here, but when it comes to certain pieces you have, I get that you have to be careful. You can give up equal assets, but you don’t want to take away your best opportunities to keep things going down the line.

"

This falls in line with what folks have come to expect from the Celtics and why the front office owns something as critical as the Brooklyn Nets' pick next year in the first place.

The Celtics also reportedly have interest in Blake Griffin, according to Sporting News' Sean Deveney, as well as Russell Westbrook.

In fact, Bleacher Report's Howard Beck listed Boston as the point guard's most likely destination:

The conversation has switched from Jimmy Butler of the Chicago Bulls—a team that has since transitioned to win-now mode—to Griffin and Westbrook, but the angle remains the same.

Ainge isn't going to stray from his plan, which includes now and the future. With Horford in the fold, there isn't much reason for Ainge to throw away a huge portion of what he's built for Westbrook, especially when the Celtics figure to stand a strong chance to secure his services next summer, anyway.

Dallas Camp Bringing on Notables

Dallas continues to make moves after a mild summer.

The Dallas Mavericks didn't hit it out of the park this summer like owner Mark Cuban would have loved.

Dirk Nowitzki is still in town, and new arrivals Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut are noteworthy names. But it's hard to project where Dallas will land in the deep Western Conference.

The front office, to its credit, continues to make moves ahead of camp, according to international basketball reporter David Pick:

Rodrigue Beaubois is the notable name there. The 28-year-old point guard spent four seasons with the team and averaged 7.1 points and 2.1 assists in 15.9 minutes per game.

With Deron Williams, J.J. Barea and Devin Harris on the roster already, it's hard to see why the Mavericks would add another point guard, though. Then again, injuries happen, and it's never a bad idea to have guys who are familiar with the organization.

Kyle Collinsworth is an undrafted guard out of BYU, and Giovan Oniangue is a Congolese forward who played for the Mavericks in the summer league.

It's a mix of veteran and upside players who can fill out the roster in a deep conference.

Andre Drummond Details

Details surrounding Andre Drummond continue to emerge.

The Detroit Pistons took care of a major part of their future recently, getting young center Andre Drummond under contract.

When Detroit officially announced the move Friday, head coach and president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy spoke about the importance of it.

"Re-signing Andre was a top priority for us this offseason," Van Gundy said. "The offensive and defensive numbers speak for themselves, but more importantly, his commitment to the organization has allowed us to put together a young group of players that will grow together and continue to move the franchise forward."

Still, ESPN.com's Marc Stein had some interesting contract details to reveal, per his sources:

The trade kicker is the interesting part. Players with max deals can't exceed their salaries via a trade, but—in theory—Drummond could if the cap continues to rise in the coming years.

That's perhaps thinking too far ahead, of course. Drummond is only 22 years old and fits with the core of Reggie Jackson (26), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (23), Stanley Johnson (20) and Tobias Harris (24).

Last year, the Connecticut product posted monster averages of 16.2 points, 14.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 52.1 percent from the floor.

Getting someone like Drummond under contract is how smart, contending teams operate. Now, Detroit has one of the most intriguing young cores in the league locked up for years, headed by a high-upside center who could blossom into one of the league's best players.
