Iceland has been a great story so far, not only by making it to the round of 16, but also upsetting England in unlikely fashion. The odds are obviously against them eliminating the host team, though, so bettors would be wise not to get too carried away and wager their life savings on a similar result here.
The chances of a draw even seem slim considering how well France has played lately along with the fact that they have gone 6-0-1 in the past seven meetings.
While the French have not blown anybody away, they have yet to suffer a loss and allowed only two goals in four games. After surrendering a quick goal to the Irish two minutes into their round of 16 matchup, they rebounded nicely with consecutive goals by Antoine Griezmann three minutes apart early in the second half to take control and pull off the victory.
France won Group A with seven points, while Iceland placed second in Group F with five—ahead of Portugal and behind Hungary. Before their upset of England, the best performance for the Icelanders was probably a 1-1 draw with the Portuguese in their group opener June 14. They scored the equalizer in the 50th minute and showed some resilience in not giving up after trailing 1-0 at halftime.
The French will look to pressure them by scoring early on again, which is something they did not do versus Ireland yet still emerged victorious.
The pressure on the host team to advance should be at a minimum, especially considering their opponent. France will not get caught looking ahead to what could be an outstanding semifinal game against Germany. Instead, the inexperience of Iceland will catch up to them as the stakes get higher, and it will be too much for them to overcome. Look for the French to win in a rout.
France vs. Iceland Prediction: 3-0 France
