Germany vs. Italy Betting Odds Preview, Euro 2016 Quarterfinal Prediction

OddsShark.comJun 30, 2016

In the most evenly matched quarterfinal game of Euro 2016, two group winners will square off Saturday when Germany takes on Italy in Bordeaux, France. The Germans are coming off a 3-0 win over Slovakia in the round of 16 and are listed as 5-4 favorites (bet $100 to win $125) on the three-way line at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. But the underdog Italians may have been more impressive in blanking Spain 2-0.

Match Odds: Germany 5-4, Italy 303-100, Draw 201-100 (Matchup Report)

Even though Italy would seem to be a good underdog pick based on recent performances, defending World Cup champion Germany will look to take advantage of a depleted opponent and live up to its billing as tourney favorite.

The Italians will not have midfielder Thiago Motta after he picked up his second yellow card against the Spaniards, while Daniele De Rossi (thigh) and Antonio Candreva (hamstring) are also expected to miss the match because of injuries.

While Italy has never lost to Germany in a major tournament, going 2-0-2 in four previous meetings, the underdog is obviously an underdog for a reason here. The Germans are the favorites to win the tourney at 11-4 and turned in their most dominant performance against the Slovakians following their narrow victory against Poland in Group C.

The Poles had a smaller goal difference and lost the tiebreaker, also settling for a 0-0 draw with Germany in group play.

The Italians had a similar experience in Group E, overcoming a 1-0 loss to Ireland in the finale to win it on a tiebreaker over Belgium based on goals allowed. They had beaten the Belgians and Sweden by a combined score of 3-0 in their first two games during group play before knocking out Spain on Monday.

The first score by Giorgio Chiellini in the 33rd minute set the tone, and then they got an insurance goal from Graziano Pelle in extra time to seal the deal.

However, the Italians will face a large step up in competition versus Germany, and you have to go all the way back to their opening win against Belgium on June 13 to find their best performance of Euro 2016.

The same cannot be said of the Germans, who look to be getting stronger and flexed their muscles in shutting out Slovakia. Look for more of the same as the favorites move on.

Germany vs. Italy Prediction: 2-0 Germany
