Jodie Meeks to Magic: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reacton

Timothy RappJun 29, 2016

The Orlando Magic acquired veteran guard Jodie Meeks from the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday in exchange for a 2019 second-round pick, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical. The Magic would later announce the news, stating the Pistons would receive a "future conditional second-round draft pick."

Meeks, 28, appeared in just three regular-season games for the Pistons in 2015-16, averaging 7.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 14.3 minutes per game. He missed the majority of the season with a broken foot, though he did return in the postseason and made one appearance against the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring two points in two minutes in the team's Game 2 loss.

He's played in just 63 games over the past two seasons for the Pistons due to various injuries, and the trade was clearly a salary dump for the Pistons, as Meeks is owed $6.5 million next season, per Spotrac.com.

Meeks has spent much of his career either coming off the bench or starting for struggling teams, averaging 9.9 points per game in his career. He'll give Orlando another solid shooter on the wing, however, as he's made 37.3 percent of his three-point attempts in his career.

With Orlando dealing Victor Oladipo to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Serge Ibaka deal this offseason, there are minutes to be had at shooting guard, though restricted free agent Evan Fournier will be locked in as the starter if he's retained, and last year's fifth overall pick, Mario Hezonja, will likely see his role expand in the 2016-17 season.

That should mean that Meeks will be the team's third option at the 2, though if Hezonja struggles, Meeks could see his minutes increased behind Fournier. And given his ability to strike from beyond the arc, he'll have a role in Orlando if he's able to remain healthy.
