Mike D'Antoni's Wife Rescued By Boat After West Virginia Flooding
Houston Rockets head coach Mike D'Antoni's wife, Laurel, was rescued by boat after being forced to leave her home in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, amid floods that devastated the area.
Calvin Watkins of ESPN.com reported the news Monday regarding Laurel D'Antoni, who Watkins said was preparing to move to Houston, where her husband accepted a coaching job in May.
"Everybody is fine," said Mike D'Antoni on Monday, per Watkins. "Our hearts go out to all the people that aren't fine in areas that are devastated. We just want to try to help them and rebuild in any way that we can."
Mike D'Antoni provided further details on the situation, indicating his wife and their two cats managed to board a boat and that he wasn't in the area when the storms occurred. He was in Houston on Thursday in preparation for the NBA draft.
The coach elaborated further, saying, per Watkins: "It was very scary. ... Although I wouldn't have been much help with the two cats. There was some damage, very minimal, water rising, and she was caught in it; she couldn't get out, and the only way she could leave was by boat. They came out and rescued her and some different people."
As Watkins noted, the devastating storms and resultant floods that hit West Virginia beginning this past Thursday killed 23 people and caused widespread power outages.
Numerous homes were also lost, but the D'Antoni residence, as Mike mentioned, didn't suffer much in comparison.
The D'Antonis live in The Greenbrier during the offseason, a resort that also serves as the venue for the PGA Tour's Greenbrier Classic. Flooding forced the cancellation of the annual golf tournament, which was scheduled for July.
