Tim Howard Named Starting USMNT Keeper vs. Colombia in 2016 Copa America

United States Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced Friday that Tim Howard will start in goal Saturday when the Stars and Stripes square off against Colombia in the Copa America Centenario third-place game.

"Brad Guzan played a tremendous tournament," Klinsmann said, per the team's official Twitter account. "He's totally on board to give Tim this game."

Howard served as the USMNT's primary goalkeeper during the 2014 World Cup, but he announced in August of that year that he planned to take a one-year break from international duties.

In that time, Guzan slid into Howard's role. Klinsmann proceeded to name Guzan the team's starter for the Copa America, citing the 31-year-old's strong play in the runup to the tournament as the main reason for his promotion.

In five Copa America starts, Guzan recorded two shutouts—each of which came in the group stage. However, his last start came in a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Argentina in the semifinals.

According to ESPN FC, Howard's appearance in net for the USMNT will be his first since he was called on as a halftime substitute during a 3-1 win over Puerto Rico in May.
