Belgium vs. Italy: Live Stream, Odds and Form Guide for Euro 2016

Gianni VerschuerenJun 12, 2016

Belgium and Italy will start their UEFA Euro 2016 campaign on Monday, as the two Group E favourites go head-to-head at the Stade des Lumieres in Lyon.

The Red Devils enter the tournament among the favourites for the title but with plenty of injury concerns, while Italy are always a threat in major tournaments, even if the current generation of stars hasn't impressed of late.

Italy's main strengths lie in defence, while Belgium are one of the top attacking outfits in this year's tournament. Fans should be in for an intriguing clash of styles, and Monday's result will have a major impact on how Group E plays out.

Form Guide

Belgium: Lost just one of last nine fixtures.

Italy: Haven't faced a shot on target in last two matches (h/t OptaPaolo).

Italy's 3-5-2 formation is anchored by the Juventus back line of Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli, with team-mate Gianluigi Buffon defending the net. Those four may just form Euro 2016's top defensive unit, and they'll immediately face a tremendous challenge on Monday.

With the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, Belgium have the attacking firepower to score against just about anyone, and they've been doing exactly that in 2016finding the goal in every single one of their friendlies so far.

Those goals are sorely needed, as Belgium will start the tournament without top centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Lombaerts. The latter suffered an injury during preparations for Euro 2016 and was expected to be ready in time for the knockout stages, but head coach Marc Wilmots isn't taking any chances, per the team's official Twitter account:

Under normal circumstances, the Tottenham Hotspur duo of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld play at full-back for the Red Devils, but the latter is certain to move inside, while the former will do the same if Barcelona's Thomas Vermaelen isn't fit in time for the match.

Either way, the Belgian defence faces a lot of questions going into the match. They conceded far too easily in friendlies against the likes of Finland and Norway, but Wilmots still believes in his defence.

Per Football Italia, he told reporters he plans to use the criticism as motivation: “It’s good if Italy talk about our defence as a weak spot. I’ll hang the article up in the locker room so they can all see it. We will use that sort of thing to fire us up even more.”

For the Azzurri, the question marks are the exact opposite. Graziano Pelle and Eder have been coach Antonio Conte's first-choice starters in attack of late, but neither inspires confidence. Juventus' Simone Zaza could start against Belgium, but he spent most of the 2015-16 campaign on the Bianconeri bench.

The lack of creativity and scoring potential continues in midfield, where Daniele De Rossi was by far the team's top performer in the recent friendlies. Antonio Candreva appears in excellent form ahead of the match, but Italy's attacking threats are nowhere near the calibre of Belgium's.

Expect the Azzurri to prioritise set-piece situations and not to take too many chances―when these two teams met in Belgium last year, the Red Devils cruised to a 3-1 win, and Conte will not have forgotten.

Final Prediction: Belgium 1-1 Italy
