Copa America Results 2016: Group Results, Standings and Tables After Thursday
Group C is playing for the second time in the 2016 Copa America with some crucial points at stake for all four teams Thursday.
Uruguay entered the day in dire need of a win as it squared off against a Venezuela team that was looking to inch closer to securing a spot in the knockout round. Uruguay was coming off a 3-1 loss to Mexico, while Venezuela defeated Jamaica 1-0 on June 5.
Mexico is also looking to set itself up for advancement, but Jamaica is a speedy team that could frustrate the Mexicans if they are not on their game.

Uruguay vs. Venezuela
The 2016 Copa America tournament has found its Cinderella team: Venezuela.
The team pulled off a minor upset over Jamaica in its first match, but the Venezuelans pulled off one of their greatest victories in team history by taking down Uruguay on Thursday, 1-0. Coming into the match, Uruguay ranked No. 9 in the world, while Venezuela came in at No. 77.
After a relatively uneventful start to the first half, Venezuela finally received a break when Salomon Rondon tapped in the rebound on a gorgeous shot from midfield, as Univision showed:
Rondon made some team history with the tally, per the Copa America's Twitter account:
Uruguay put some pressure on Venezuela in the second half, but it was unable to equalize. Edinson Cavani had a golden opportunity with time winding down, but he inexplicably missed the net, as Univision showed:
Cavani had several opportunities to tie the game, but his inability to finish was uncharacteristic for a player of his caliber.
Uruguay outshot Venezuela 12-9 and held 59 percent of the possession, but the Venezuelan defense and goalkeeper Dani Hernandez were too strong.
Uruguay's title hopes are now over thanks to its two losses.
Venezuela will advance through Group C with six points, which is a huge shock considering it entered the tournament as one of the lowest-ranked teams. The Venezuelans, who look confident with the ball and on defense, will look to continue their strong play against Mexico on Monday.
Mexico vs. Jamaica
Mexico advanced through the group stage Thursday with its 2-0 victory over Jamaica. Thanks to the result, as well as Venezuela’s win over Uruguay, Jamaica and Uruguay were both eliminated from the Copa America.
Mexico got off to something of a slow start and allowed Jamaica a couple of early chances, but Chicharito Hernandez put El Tri up for good in the 18th minute when he buried a header off a cross from Jesus Manuel Corona.
Univision Deportes shared the goal:
Alex Dowd of Fox Sports noted Chicharito’s goal was his 45th with the Mexican national team, which is just one shy of Jared Borgetti’s record of 46. It was business as usual for the Mexico star in a big tournament:
Mexico ultimately dominated possession throughout the contest (64 percent to 36 percent, per ESPN FC) and ended up with 18 shots to Jamaica’s 10, but goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was also brilliant when tested:
The El Tri attack rewarded the goalkeeper in the 81st minute with an insurance goal when Oribe Peralta rolled the ball into the bottom right corner with his left foot, via Univision Deportes:
Next up for Mexico is the showdown with Venezuela. The winner will clinch the Group C top spot and, theoretically, better positioning as the tournament advances to the bracket portion.
