Francesco Totti, Roma Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Tom BeckJun 7, 2016

Roma have confirmed 39-year-old attacker Francesco Totti has signed a new one-year contract extension at the club after agreeing terms on Tuesday, per their official website

The Giallorossi captain will remain at Stadio Olimpico for the 25th season of his career after deciding to extend his stay in Italy's capital.

FIFA World Cup 2006 winner Totti's future at the club appeared uncertain after a season-long dispute with head coach Luciano Spalletti regarding his lack of first-team action.

Per WhoScored.com, the attacking midfielder featured in just 387 minutes of Serie A football last term and made just two starts in the league.

WhoScored detailed Totti’s effectiveness this calendar year, with the statistics aided by his impact off the bench:

Meanwhile, bookmaker bet365 honoured the attacker’s legacy with a list of his achievements at club level:

The legendary playmaker netted four goals in as many games toward the 2015-16 domestic season closure, but rumours remained that he would be let go at the end of the campaign, per Sheridan Bird of the MailOnline.

According to the Guardian, former Zenit Saint Petersburg boss Spalletti was forced to denounce rumours in April that he and Roma icon Totti had fallen out over a dispute following a 3-3 draw with Atalanta.

Meanwhile, Totti recently took to his personal website to deny rumours that contract negotiations were long-lasting due to his inflated wage demands, per Ben Gladwell of ESPN FC.

However, with his contract set to expire in June, Roma have confirmed the forward will remain at the club for at least one more season. Totti—who will turn 40 in September—was delighted at the chance to extend his stay and hailed his relationship with club president James Pallotta.

“I really wanted this contract, it represents the realisation of my dream,” he told ASRoma.com. “I always wanted to end my career having only worn one shirt—the Roma one. After speaking with the president, I am even more convinced that, working together, we can achieve great things.”

A one-club player, Totti has won the 2001 Serie A title, the Coppa Italia on two occasions and the Italian Super Cup twice. Pallotta was equally as thrilled as the former Italy international to wrap up the deal, as he told ASRoma.com:

"

It’s quite fitting that on the anniversary of the day AS Roma was founded, Francesco Totti has signed a new playing contract. No one has played more games or scored more goals for this football club than Francesco Totti and we’re delighted that he will continue for one more season. He’s earnt this contract and now we want Francesco’s final season on the pitch to be the start of a new era of success for AS Roma.

"

OptaPaolo noted the historic relevance Totti will always have at the club after continuing his playing career:

Totti will continue to fight for a first-team place next season alongside the likes of Edin Dzeko, Diego Perotti and Mohamed Salah as Roma finished the season in third spot, securing them group-stage qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
