Costa To Miss Copa America Centenario
Thursday, May 26
Freitas added that Costa has been removed from Brazil's squad for the upcoming Copa America Centenario tournament, which begins on June 3.
The Brazilian national team announced that 34-year-old Kaka will take Costa's place on the roster (via Philly Sports' Jonathan Tannenwald).
Costa, who is nine years younger than Kaka, recently completed a 2015-16 campaign with Bayern Munich that ended with Bundesliga and German Cup titles.
He scored seven goals and recorded 12 assists in all competitions for the German side, while adding three goals for Brazil in seven matches.
Developing into the motor of Munich's midfield, Costa is one of the bright young stars not only in the Bundesliga but on the international stage:
Despite his playmaking capabilities, Costa was listed as a forward for Brazil's 23-man Copa America roster, alongside Hulk, Ricardo Oliveira and Gabriel.
Brazil are also without their star forward Neymar, who chose to play in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and not the Copa America, after his domestic team Barcelona implored Brazil to lighten his summer workload.
Now with an aging Kaka, who has two goals in seven matches with Orlando FC in MLS, Brazil will have to try to keep up with continental powers Argentina and Uruguay, along with North American powers Mexico and the United States, in this summer's Copa America.
