Duke Coach Has Parents Surprise Walk-On with Scholarship During Team Meeting

Kyle NewportMay 26, 2016

Duke Blue Devils football coach David Cutcliffe wanted to present defensive end Danny Doyle with a scholarship in a way that was special for the walk-on's entire family.

Cutcliffe came up with the brilliant idea of having Doyle's parents break the news to the 20-year-old...during a team meeting.

Cutcliffe went about the meeting as he might on any other day, making small talk about the room's new carpet. Then, all of a sudden, his phone "unexpectedly" went off.

If players aren't allowed to have their phones out during meetings, you can imagine their reactions when their coach's phone started ringing loudly. But of course, this phone call was just too important for Cutcliffe to not take—especially since it wasn't even for him.

Cutcliffe called Doyle up to the front of the room to take the call, and it was then that the junior found out he was no longer a walk-on. Not only is that news itself fantastic, but he also got to share the moment with his parents. Just perfect.
