EPL Table: 2016 Week 38 Top Scorers After Latest Premier League Scores

Rob BlanchetteMay 11, 2016

Sunderland guaranteed Premier League survival for yet another year after a convincing 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light against a fading Everton on Wednesday night.

The result sees Newcastle United and Norwich City relegated to the Championship before the final game of the campaign is completed.

Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe failed to add to his 15-goal haul for the season, as Sam Allardyce's men once more proved their desire to avoid relegation.

In Wednesday's two other fixtures, Chelsea attempted to end their campaign on a high and appeared to have earned a 1-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield. However a last-ditch header from Christian Benteke saved the Reds a point in their final home game of 2015-16.

Norwich defeated Watford, 4-2, at Carrow Road, but the result at Sunderland sees the Canaries condemned to the lower leagues with the Magpies next term.

Three-Way Battle For Premier League Golden Boot

Romelu Lukaku's failure to score at Sunderland sees the Premier League Golden Boot likely to go to one of three strikers.

Harry Kane leads the way on 25 goals, while Jamie Vardy and Sergio Aguero sit just one goal behind the Tottenham Hotspur and England attacker.

Spurs have gone off the boil in recent weeks, restricting Kane's prowess at the business end of the campaign.

And with Leicester City already crowned champions, Vardy has no pressure to increase his amazing total for the year.

Manchester City are the team that must win on the final day to guarantee a top-four berth, making Aguero a realistic tip to steal the top scorer's spot on Sunday.

City face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on the final day, and after Manchester United fell at West Ham United, outgoing coach Manuel Pellegrini will look towards his Argentina superstar for goals and relief.

Vardy returned to the Foxes team after suspension and found the back of the net in his own inimitable style.

The England striker can help Leicester to their 24th win of the league season by grabbing his 25th strike of the season.

Everton's crash of form has seen Lukaku's chances of winning the Golden Boot evaporate after a largely impressive campaign.

The 22-year-old has been the Toffees' sole goal threat on a weekly basis this season, but the Belgian has run out of form in sequence with his team-mates.

The former Chelsea player has notched 25 goals and six assist in all competitions, per WhoScored.com, and will attract interest from Europe's biggest clubs next year as he further matures.

Kane is not safe at the top of the charts, and Aguero will want to give his manager the perfect parting gift as well as secure UEFA Champions League football for the Sky Blues.

In what has been one of the most entertaining seasons in Premier League history, the Golden Boot could be shared three ways between a trio of striking mavericks in the English league.

However, Vardy can cap his personal fairy tale in style if he wins the Boot outright after a season performance beyond his wildest dreams.
