Tottenham vs. Southampton: Winners and Losers from Premier League

Rob LancasterMay 8, 2016

Having started the week with a 2-2 draw at Chelsea on Monday that ended their Premier League title hopes, Tottenham finished it with a surprising 2-1 loss at home to Southampton on Sunday.

It looked like Spurs were quickly over the disappointment of missing out on the league crown when they took the lead through Son Heung-Min's 16th-minute goal.

However, the visiting Saints recovered from the early setback to record their first win at White Hart Lane since September 2003.

Steven Davis was the visitors' unlikely hero, the midfielder scoring once in each half to turn the game around.

Here, Bleacher Report picks out the winners and losers from the game in the English capital.

Steven Davis is not known for his goalscoring exploits.

According to WhoScored.com on Twitter, the midfielder's brace against Tottenham came after he had scored just twice in his previous 32 Premier League appearances this season.

After turning home Dusan Tadic's low cross in the 31st minute, Davis combined again with the same player to put Southampton in front in the 72nd minute.

He exchanged a one-two with Tadic before angling a low, if somewhat weakly struck shot into the corner of the net. It was all about placement, not power.

Davis wasn't just about scoring goals for an in-form Southampton side.

Per Sky Sports Statto, the Northern Ireland international covered 11.04 kilometres at White Hart Lane and managed 47 sprints.

Loser: Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris could not do much to prevent Steven Davis' match-winning goal in the second half.

However, the Tottenham goalkeeper will certainly feel he should have prevented the same player from scoring Southampton's equaliser before the break.

Davis was at close range when he turned Dusan Tadic's cross toward goal, yet his effort lacked any real power.

Lloris looked set to make the save as he dived to his right, only for the ball to squirm beyond him and into the net.

The Frenchman—who has kept 13 clean sheets in the Premier League this season—was visibly disappointed to have let in such a soft effort.

Winner: Son Heung-Min

Son Heung-Min's goal ended up being in a losing cause for Tottenham, but it did at least create a bit of club history.

His first-half effort took Spurs' tally for their Premier League campaign to 68—their highest ever in the history of the competition, according to Sky Sports Statto on Twitter.

The South Korean made it two goals in as many matches when his run from deep allowed him to get on the end of a through ball that was initially meant for Harry Kane.

Son calmly rounded goalkeeper Fraser Forster before dummying his way past two Southampton defenders to slam the ball into an unguarded net from close range.

Loser: Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has definitely had better weeks in charge of Tottenham.

While it has been excellent season for Tottenham, they are falling flat in the final stretch.

After back-to-back draws with West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea, the second of which ended their title dreams, Spurs suffered a first home defeat in the Premier League since January 13.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino had his sights set on finishing the campaign on top of the table—now they are still not yet certain of second place.

However, Arsenal's 2-2 draw away at Manchester City on Sunday leaves Spurs in pole position to finish above their north London rivals. They sit two points clear and have a vastly superior goal difference too.

Pochettino isn't interested in the Gunners, though.

He said after the home defeat, per Matt Gatward of the Independent: "I don’t care about Arsenal. I want to win the league and be on the top. Sure I want to be above them. The supporters and players feel the same but to try to improve and be bigger we need to look at us and not care what happens with our neighbours."

Winner: Ronald Koeman

Southampton do not want this season to come to an end.

According to Squawka Football on Twitter, Ronald Koeman's side have now picked up 36 points in 2016. Only newly crowned champions Leicester City (41) have managed more since the turn of the year.

Fresh from beating Manchester City 4-2 a week ago, they overturned a deficit to record a sixth league triumph in their last eight outings.

Their fine run of form has put them in contention to qualify for next season's UEFA Europa League. Were the season a fortnight longer, a top-four finish would be in their sights.

Koeman hailed the effort of his players in his post-match interview, per Shamoon Hafez of BBC Sport: "It's a great win for us, because to win here against Tottenham, one of the best teams in the league, is a big result. If we can win next week at home we will have 63 points—a really fantastic achievement by the team. We like to play in Europe, and it's important for the clubs and the players."
