Luke Walton Named Lakers Head Coach: Twitter Reacts to Los Angeles' Hire
Luke Walton is going back to Cali. The Los Angeles Lakers announced they hired the Golden State Warriors assistant coach and former Lakers player to be their next head coach Friday.
Walton coached the Warriors for the first 43 games this year in relief of Steve Kerr, who was recovering from back surgery. He went 39-4 and led the defending NBA champions to a record 24-0 start.
The Lakers wasted no time in finding a replacement for Byron Scott to usher in the post-Kobe Bryant era.
Twitter reacted accordingly, starting with some words from general manager Mitch Kupchak, per Serena Winters of Lakers Nation:
ESPN's Adam Schefter took some time away from covering the NFL draft to relay the news to his followers:
It may not be the real Bill Walton, but we can imagine this being the Hall of Famer's reaction to his son becoming a full-time head coach:
Gerald Bourguet of Hoops Habit thinks Walton is going to need time to develop, but there are pieces in place to build a winning culture:
Frank Isola of the New York Daily News had an important question regarding Walton's coaching style:
Even if there aren't any similarities between Walton and Kerr, they'll at least have this in common, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News:
Beto Duran of Golden Boy Boxing had a timetable for when to expect the Lakers to introduce Walton as the coach:
This is a crucial time for the Lakers, who are coming off a franchise-low 17 wins and only 36 wins in the last two years. Walton showed he can coach the best team in the NBA; now he'll get a chance to show how good of a coach he is by taking on a rebuilding job in Los Angeles.
