Pep Guardiola Reacts to Saul Niguez Goal After Atletico Madrid vs. Bayern Munich

James DudkoApr 27, 2016

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola was not happy with his team's "stand-off" defending for Saul Niguez's fine goal that gave Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday.

Niguez stroked home an excellent shot with just over 11 minutes gone, with BT Sport Football relaying a highlight of the decisive moment:

Guardiola felt his team invited the strike, per the tournament's official site:

It was a sentiment echoed by beaten goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, per Bayern:

But while Guardiola and Neuer rued costly mistakes, Atleti manager Diego Simeone was naturally keen to praise the stunning effort. In particular, the Argentinian lauded Niguez's technical quality, as well as his impish bravado, during his interview with BT:

There may have been some lapses at the back for Bayern, but Guardiola felt his team was too sluggish early on and invited needless pressure:

The Munich chief was left to bemoan his side's struggles in the final third on a night when he surprisingly left forward Thomas Muller on the bench:

Still, Guardiola believes his side can make it through, despite making things difficult for themselves ahead of next Tuesday's return at the Allianz Arena:

Guardiola should rely on the full contingent of his talented attacking options back in Munich. Atleti's disciplined and rugged defence won't buckle easily, so it will take everything Bayern's squad has to turn this tie around.

As for Simeone, he'll again count on keeping things miserly at the back while hoping for some more magic from Niguez, Antoine Griezmann and Co.
