Per Press Association Sport (via ESPN FC), the game was then suspended with a minute remaining by referee Bulent Yildirim, and a statement from the Turkish Football Federation said "a decision on the result will be made by the league's board of directors."
The full statement read: "In the match between Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor in week 30 of the Spor Toto Super Lig, in the 89th minute assistant referee Volkan Bayarslan was assaulted. The on-field action was suspended by referee Bulent Yildirim. A decision on the result will be made by the league's board of directors."
The PA report added that images on Fenerbahce's website "showed another [fan] climbing to the top of a stand and pulling down Fenerbahce's club flag," while riot police also had to be called into action to re-establish order.
One of the photographs reportedly showed a young girl wearing Trabzonspor colours being carried away to safety by a policeman.
Alper Potuk, Volkan Sen, Nani and Robin van Persie had given the visitors a very comfortable lead before the match was abandoned.
The Guardian indicated Fenerbahce will likely be awarded the victory and thus move to within three points of table-topping Besiktas with four games remaining in the season.
Trabzonspor currently sit in 11th place in the Super Lig.
