Top 10 Goals from Around the World This Weekend

Tom WebbApr 25, 2016

Bayern Munich are just one win away from a record-extending 26th Bundesliga title following a 2-0 win away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday—you'll want to read on to see Douglas Costa's stunning strike from the Olympic Stadium.

Meanwhile in England, Leicester City took another step towards an improbable Premier League title win with a comfortable 4-0 win at home to Swansea City, a result that piles the pressure on closest challengers Tottenham Hotspur, who host West Bromwich Albion on Monday night.

Elsewhere, the 2015/16 A-League is fast approaching a climax, with Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers emerging from two high-scoring semi-finals to reach the final on May 1.

The Major League Soccer season is much younger, with this weekend seeing Steven Gerrard open his account for the season with the clincher in LA Galaxy's 5-2 win over Real Salt Lake.

Of course, there was plenty more action from across Europe and elsewhere, so we've done the hard (but enjoyable) work of hunting down the very best of the goals. Enjoy.

Sergi Canos, Milton Keynes Dons vs. BRENTFORD

1 of 10

Sergi Canos showed why he's so highly rated by parent club Liverpool with a lovely finish in Brentford's 4-1 win away to Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday.

The visitors trailed to Nicky Maynard's sixth-minute strike but were soon level when Canos picked up the ball on the edge of the opposition box and floated a precise finish over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Brentford went on to score three more to complete a comfortable win and condemn the Dons to relegation and League One.

Fyodor Smolov, KRASNODAR vs. Ufa

2 of 10

There was a brilliant overhead-kick goal in the Russian Premier League on Sunday, courtesy of Krasnodar's Fyodor Smolov in a 4-0 win at home to Ufa.

The home side went ahead in the 35th minute, and only three more minutes had passed when Smolov controlled Yury Gazinsky's lofted pass on the chest and sent a superb acrobatic effort into the bottom corner.

Krasnodar added two more in the second half to complete the rout.

Adam Lallana, LIVERPOOL vs. Newcastle United

3 of 10

Liverpool may have left Anfield disappointed after relinquishing a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Newcastle United, but the fans would have enjoyed Adam Lallana's fine first-half strike.

Jurgen Klopp's side went ahead in the second minute through Daniel Sturridge, before Lallana received the ball from Alberto Moreno on the half-hour mark and planted an exquisite finish into the top corner with his left foot.

The England midfielder has enjoyed an upturn in fortune since Klopp took over the Reds in October, and Saturday's strike was the latest example of his improved form.

Victor Ayala, LANUS vs. Banfield

4 of 10

This one stayed hit.

Lanus were entertaining Banfield in Argentina's Primera Division on Saturday, when Victor Ayala broke the deadlock with a thunderous 30-yard effort.

Two playersone from each sidehad already seen red, when Ayala received the ball from a quick free-kick and let fly with an hour played.

The ball flew over the crowded penalty area and past the motionless goalkeeper, who could only watch as it hit the back of the net. Boom.

Ruben Neves, Academica vs. FC PORTO

5 of 10

FC Porto's teenage sensation Ruben Neves makes it into our top 10 this week with an outrageous first-time volley in a 2-1 win away to Academica on Saturday.

Porto have endured a difficult campaign and currently sit third in the Primeira Liga, some way behind Benfica and Sporting. They fell behind after 25 minutes of their fixture at the weekend, only for Neves to rescue them with a peach of a goal.

The magic happened when a long throw was only partially cleared, providing Neves with the opportunity to adjust his feet and send an effortless volley dipping over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Yacine Brahimi grabbed a second-half winner for the visitors, but it was the nonchalance with which Neves hit the equaliser that provided the game's defining moment.

Coke, SEVILLA vs. Real Betis

6 of 10

Sevilla claimed the bragging rights from a hotly contested Seville derby on Sunday, when they claimed a 2-0 victory at home to Real Betis.

Kevin Gameiro put the hosts ahead after 67 minutes, before Coke secured the win with a brilliant 80th-minute strike.

Teed up on the edge of the box, the Spanish right-back smashed a fierce first-time effort that flew through the penalty area and into the back of the net.

No better time or place for a golazo than the local derby, after all.

Barry Bannan, Derby County vs. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

7 of 10

Barry Bannan provided the highlight from a crunch Championship game between play-off contenders Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The former Aston Villa and Crystal Palace man put Wednesday ahead on 69 minutes when he seized the ball in midfield and struck a crisp strike that clipped the underside of the crossbar on its way into the net.

Darren Bent's 82nd-minute equaliser clinched a 1-1 draw for fifth-placed Derby, a result that maintains their six-point lead over Wednesday in sixth.

Douglas Costa, Hertha Berlin vs. BAYERN MUNICH

8 of 10

Bayern Munich are just one win away from a fourth consecutive Bundesliga title after a 2-0 win away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

Arturo Vidal gave the Bavarians the lead after 48 minutes, before Douglas Costa made sure of the points with a stunning golazo.

Receiving the ball on the right wing, the Brazilian cut inside onto his left foot and struck a venomous swerving shot that flew into the far top corner.

It's been a truly impressive debut season in Germany for Costa, and this goal only adds to that.

Javi Gomez, SOCUELLAMOS vs. Toledo

9 of 10

There was a frankly astonishing overhead kick scored in the Spanish third division on Sunday.

With Socuellamos hosting Toledo at the Estadio Paquito Jiminez in Segunda B, home forward Javi Gomez won the match when he controlled the ball on his chest and, without hesitation, sent a stunning acrobatic effort looping over the desperately sprawling goalkeeper from all of 30 yards.

It was a truly stunning strike and a more-than-worthy match-winner, by any standard.

Cyril Thereau, Inter Milan vs. UDINESE

10 of 10

Udinese threatened to cause an upset on Saturday when they took the lead after nine minutes against Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Roberto Mancini's men have enjoyed a steady season and are currently pushing for a place in next season's UEFA Champions League, but their plans were temporarily disrupted when Cyril Thereau latched onto Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu's lofted through ball and connected with a beautifully executed first-time volley.

Inter hit back with three goals of their own to claim a 3-1 win, but it was Thereau's goal that caught the eye.
