Twitter Reacts as Leicester City Snatch Controversial Draw with West Ham United

Tom WebbApr 17, 2016

Leicester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points with a dramatic and controversial draw against West Ham United at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Famous Foxes fan Gary Lineker was reminded prior to kick-off of a certain promise he had made earlier in the season:

"

Here we go again. Another 90 minutes of hoping that reality doesn't show its ugly, miserable face. Come on Leicester!

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) April 17, 2016"

The away side started the brighter and came within millimetres of an opening goal when Cheikhou Kouyate's header was tipped onto both posts by Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel:

"

What an escape for Leicester, Kouyate header touched on to one post by Schmeichel & rebounds off the other back into his arms.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) April 17, 2016"

That shook Claudio Ranieri's side to life, and they took the lead after 18 minutes through top scorer Jamie Vardy:

"

GOAL! #LCFC 1-0 #WHUFC
GOAL! Jamie Vardy ⚽️

"

Leicester's 3 PFA player of the year nominees combined to put Leicester in front v West Ham. Mahrez started it, Kante's run, Vardy's goal.

— Paul Hayward (@_PaulHayward) April 17, 2016"
"

What a brilliant goal! Classic Leicester! Classic Vardy! This house just erupted.

"

1 – Leicester City scored with their first shot on target against West Ham. Awake.

"

Thought West Ham's best chance was staying deep and playing Carroll. He's on the bench and they got caught on the counter.

11 – Jamie Vardy has scored the opening goal in 11 Premier League games this season; more than any other player. Blocks.

Leicester were impressing once again:

"

One of the many things about Leicester other clubs could study is how well they get the ball back. They're frustrating West Ham everywhere.

— Paul Hayward (@_PaulHayward) April 17, 2016"
"

Leicester will be the first city other than London or Manchester to host a title-winner in 21 years. If you like that kind of thing.

— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) April 17, 2016"

The game was turned on it's head 11 minutes into the second half, when referee Jonathan Moss showed goalscorer Vardy a second yellow card for diving, with the imminent red following soon after. It was a decision that split opinion online:

"

Big call here. Referee Jon Moss sends off Jamie Vardy. Second yellow card for diving.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) April 17, 2016"
"

Jamie Vardy's party cancelled. He's been sent off for 2nd yellow for dive. Leicester do use the dark arts, but that's very, very, very harsh

— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) April 17, 2016"
"

You didn't really think Leicester were just going to walk this, did you? #squeakybumtime

— Ben Rumsby (@ben_rumsby) April 17, 2016"
"

That is a diabolical decision. Penalty all day long.

"

Many claiming it was a blatant dive. I'd call it a tangle of legs. Should have been 'too hard to call, play on'

— Matt Dickinson (@DickinsonTimes) April 17, 2016"

West Ham strived to cash in on their numerical advantage, and were given the chance to equalise from the spot when Wes Morgan was adjudged to have pulled down Winston Reid. Andy Carroll scored:

"

Morgan bear-hugged Reid. Carroll penalty. 1-1. Been far worse holding offences both ends. Moss inconsistent at best.

— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) April 17, 2016"
"

And Andy Carroll sends Schmeichel the wrong way. There has been a ridiculous amount of pushing & pulling in the area all day.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) April 17, 2016"
"

Oh Wes...

"

The scores had only been level for two minutes when Aaron Cresswell put the Hammers ahead with a brilliant volley:

"

Gorgeous goal from Aaron Cresswell. Expertly controlled, beautifully finished. #LCFC #WHUFC

— Duncan Castles (@DuncanCastles) April 17, 2016"
"

They may have been given a bit of help but credit where it's due, that's one hell of a volley from Cresswell.

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) April 17, 2016"
"

Leicester concede for the first time in two minutes of football.

— Richard Jolly (@RichJolly) April 17, 2016"
"

This is entirely the fault of anyone who bought a ‘Leicester City: Premiership Champions’ scarf.

— Iain Macintosh (@iainmacintosh) April 17, 2016"

Leicester were then denied a penalty for a challenge that appeared similar to Morgan's earlier misdemeanor:

"

Ogbonna has arm round Huth's neck. No offence, apparently. Jon Moss is a really poor referee. So inconsistent.

— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) April 17, 2016"
"

Jon Moss has made big calls. But been so inconsistent. You can't give one and not five others.

— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) April 17, 2016"

Then a second appeal was upheld in injury time when Carroll knocked over Jeff Schlupp. Leonardo Ulloa dispatched from the spot to make it 2-2:

"

Turns out Jon Moss *does* love a bit of narrative.

— Nick Miller (@NickMiller79) April 17, 2016"
"

Generous.

— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) April 17, 2016"
"

I've lost track of which decisions the referee is making up for anymore. It might all trace back to a throw-in about 80 minutes ago. #LEIWHU

— Joshua Robinson (@JoshRobinson23) April 17, 2016"
"

That wasn't even a debatable one. Not even half a penalty. The concept of evening things up made flesh.

— Rory Smith (@RorySmithTimes) April 17, 2016"
"

2-2 Ulloa. Last time he scored a late goal it measured on the richter scale. This is louder.

— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) April 17, 2016"

That's how it finished, with Leicester snatching a point and moving a small step closer to their maiden league title:

"

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) April 17, 2016"
"

Leicester City's "magic number" (any combination of points won by LCFC or dropped by Spurs) to clinch the title is now down to 8.

— Jake Cohen (@JakeFCohen) April 17, 2016"
"
