Twitter Reacts as Sergio Aguero's Hat-Trick Helps Manchester City Beat Chelsea

Tom WebbApr 16, 2016

Manchester City stayed on track to finish in the top four of the Premier League with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Prior to kick-off, the Premier League trophy was on display at the home of last season's champions:

The next time the Premier League trophy is back on the Chelsea pitch could be to hand it to Leicester on last day pic.twitter.com/7vKSAHUGNH

Chelsea started the match the better, with City's defence looking vulnerable:

"

Willian & Costa have given Chelsea a different level of intensity. They need it too - City are here to attack, not defend #cfc #mcfc

"

Brilliant from Loftus-Cheek, he's been superb so far! #CFC

"

RLC = Really Looks Classy #CFC

"

Costa JUST offside. City defence looking very shaky so far

City's defence...

"

Hard to believe this defence kept out PSG on Tuesday. Shambolic haha!

— Chelsea HQ (@Chelsea_HQ) April 16, 2016"

But Manuel Pellegrini's side slowly found their way into the game, drawing a number of good saves from Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois:

"

Aguero being given acres of space to drive at Chelsea's defence and pick passes for midfield runners. Courtois superb #cfc #mcfc

— Liam Twomey (@liam_twomey) April 16, 2016"
"

Well at least that adds to his value

— Rebecca (@RebeccaKnight01) April 16, 2016"

City took the lead on 33 minutes following a swift counter-attack. Kevin De Bruyne found Sergio Aguero, whose shot was deflected in off Gary Cahill:

"

All too easy for Man City as they score on the break from a Chelsea corner...Aguero shot deflects off Cahill #cfc

— Simon Johnson (@sjstandardsport) April 16, 2016"
"

Chelsea can't deal with De Bruyne's pace & power running from midfield. Should Baba have fouled him just over the halfway line? #cfc #mcfc

— Liam Twomey (@liam_twomey) April 16, 2016"
"

Chelsea have had so many corners in this game, it was only a matter of time before Man City scored from one of them #CHEMCI

The Argentinian scored again nine minutes into the second half, with De Bruyne again pulling the strings in the buildup:

"

That touch from De Bruyne.

— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) April 16, 2016"
"

City fast & devastatingly accurate on the counter again. De Bruyne driving the break & Aguero clinical. Chelsea have no answers #cfc #mcfc

— Liam Twomey (@liam_twomey) April 16, 2016"
"

Aguero - what a player. The way he stayed onside there was sublime. Can never underestimate that ability. Chelsea picked off.

Chelsea's underperforming players were not impressing:

"

Chelsea today are worse than Nasri's barnet.

— Tubes (@TubesSoccerAM) April 16, 2016"
"

Do any of these Chelsea players want a continued career at Stamford Bridge? Doesn't much look like it.

— Tony Hodson (@tonyhodson1) April 16, 2016"
"

Chelsea doing their best here to improve the value of Kevin De Bruyne's sell-on clause.

— Dan Levene (@danlevene) April 16, 2016"
"

Glad for Conte that he'll be well-paid by #CFC next season. Needs a big salary to pay all the hair plugs he'll need replacing.

— Garry Hayes (@garryhayes) April 16, 2016"

Things went from bad to worse for the Blues when Courtois was shown a red card after bringing down Fernandinho when he was through on goal:

"

Courtois walks for the second time this season.

— Garry Hayes (@garryhayes) April 16, 2016"
"

6 - Thibaut Courtois is only the sixth goalkeeper to be sent off twice in a single Premier League season. Trip.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 16, 2016"
"

That. That sums up this season. Embarrassing.

— ChelseaFansChannel (@ChelseaFansYT) April 16, 2016"
"

Gary Cahill caught out badly for #mcfc third goal. Chris Smalling's likely c-b partner at the Euros. A penny for John Stones' thoughts.

— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) April 16, 2016"

Aguero stepped up and clinched his hat-trick from the spot:

"

Other world-class strikers have one major injury and are never the same. Aguero has had all those injuries and has never lost it

— Nooruddean (@BeardedGenius) April 16, 2016"
"

3 - Sergio Aguero is only the 3rd player to score an hat-trick away at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League (after van Persie & Kanu). Ace.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 16, 2016"

It was another difficult night for everyone connected with Chelsea:

"

Antonio Conte must be watching this through his fingers.

— Ryan Bailey (@RyanJayBailey) April 16, 2016"
"

Just feel that after Courtois's red card Hiddink should have embraced the absurdity of Chelsea's season & brought on Falcao to play in goal

— Sam Wallace (@SamWallaceTel) April 16, 2016"
"

Aguero completes his hat-trick from the penalty spot–and Thibaut Courtois is sent off. Chelsea fans, meanwhile... pic.twitter.com/zA5qOZj3zD

"

Chelsea fans - including Ray Wilkins - stream to the exits after Aguero's pen. "I think it's done & dusted," he tells one journalist #cfc

— Liam Twomey (@liam_twomey) April 16, 2016"
"

Lots of empty seats at Stamford Bridge now. Dangerous - that's only going to make Man City feel more at home.

City held on to maintain their four-point lead over Manchester United in the final UEFA Champions League qualifying spot:
