Sager announced in April 2014 a doctor diagnosed him with acute myeloid leukemia. He returned in 2015 for a March 5 game between the Chicago Bulls and Oklahoma City Thunder. In July, Sager underwent stem cell treatment and then returned to the sidelines, which allowed him to begin working again last October.

In an interview with Bernard Goldberg on HBO's Real Sports in March, Sager revealed the leukemia is no longer in remission:

Sports Illustrated's Ben Golliver shared part of the transcript from the interview:

Many top NBA stars, including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, tweeted out their well-wishes for Sager:

Various reporters also took part in a "Sideline for Sager" campaign to honor the legendary reporter:

According to the Associated Press' Janie McCauley (via NBA.com), Sager will continue receiving chemotherapy treatment in Houston, and he plans on working through the end of the regular season and into the NBA playoffs.
