Manchester United Hoping to Double Up

Just as manager Louis van Gaal's men were looking to attain some consistency following a four-match unbeaten run, Manchester United were embarrassed to lose 3-0 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

But the Red Devils have a superb chance to make up for recent errors when they face back-to-back home games against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace on Saturday and Wednesday, respectively.

OptaJoe recently provided evidence to suggest the clash against Villa may not be the barnburner fans want, though:

With Manchester City travelling to Chelsea and Newcastle United in successive away matches, United may look to leap into the top four, too. As things stand, they sit four points behind their local rivals after playing 32 games each.

Van Gaal evoked some negative reactions with his tactics against Spurs by choosing to field substitute Ashley Young in attack ahead of Anthony Martial. But blogger Liam Canning has noted other faults in a team that appears to be carrying dead weight:

With only a handful of games left in the campaign, Week 34 could be a make-or-break opportunity for the Red Devils upon which Van Gaal's top-four dream—and a future at Old Trafford—could rest.

Sky Sports' Lewis Dean reported on Monday that United would not fire Van Gaal if they make the top four this season, and the upcoming games against Villa and Palace will go a long way in deciding his fate.

Klopp's Maiden Merseyside Derby

It was after Goodison Park's Merseyside Derby back in October that former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was handed his exit papers, with a 1-1 draw in the local duel not enough to salvage an Anfield future.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund chief Jurgen Klopp took to the Reds helm not long after, and the German heads into his first Merseyside derby next Wednesday, a fixture with a passion and furore with which he's far from unacquainted.

It will be the second matchup of Week 34 for both teams, with the Toffees playing host to Southampton on Saturday, while the Reds travel to Bournemouth on Sunday in the latest leg of their packed schedule.

Rodgers was the last manager to be sacked after a Merseyside derby, and the pressure is understood to be growing around Everton boss Roberto Martinez. His side drew 1-1 at Watford on Saturday, after which Martinez said he can sympathise with the fans' discontent, per Goal's David Manuca, after banners reading "Martinez Out" were spotted at Vicarage Road:

"

I think that comes with the job. Since day one, my first season at Everton, I'm extremely proud and honoured to be the manager and I accept that the fans are not going to be happy with the team losing and I accept and understand.

What's important is the fans always support the team, always support in whatever way they can and help us to win games – and that's the only thing that matters. They know I would give my life to achieve a winning team. Everything we do is to make them proud, so I've got no problem with their discontent at times and football is an emotional game.

I wouldn't expect anyone to be happy with poor standards and losing three games in the league for me, in my eyes, is very poor standards. There were some banners but I understand that completely.

"

The passionate Klopp is sure to bask in the occasion of his first Merseyside derby, and expectations are high at Anfield following a 4-1 drubbing of Stoke City on Sunday.

While the Liverpool helmsman is still in the infancy of his role, however, Martinez has become an established figure in this fixture, although next Wednesday's result could greatly impact his future prospects in the role.
