Johnny Manziel Reportedly Spoke with Denver Broncos About Potential Fit

Timothy RappApr 7, 2016

Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak spoke with free-agent quarterback Johnny Manziel about the quarterback's "potential fit for the team down the line, according to two sources connected to the team," per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.

The team is not interested in signing Manziel, however, according to Mike Klis of 9News and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Per Rapoport, Kubiak reached out to Manziel a month ago.

Klis noted that Kubiak and Manziel have a "relationship" as Texas A&M alumni and that Kubiak "checked in with Manziel" after the Cleveland Browns released him. He added that Kubiak had a "long on-field talk with Manziel following Game 6 in Cleveland [last October]. Kubiak cares about him, but Johnny Football won't be a Bronco."

Schefter, meanwhile, reported the Broncos "want to see how his pending legal issues and potential NFL discipline are resolved" before even considering a move for the quarterback.

The Browns cut the 23-year-old Manziel this offseason just two years after drafting him 22nd overall in 2014. In 14 career games he's thrown for 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 57 percent of his passes, and he's rushed for 259 yards and a touchdown as well.

His tenure in the NFL to this point has been marked by off-field incidents, with the latest being a pending domestic violence case that has been taken to a grand jury, per Schefter. The grand jury will be tasked with determining whether to charge Manziel with misdemeanor assault in an incident that occurred with his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.

The Broncos, meanwhile, have just two quarterbacks on the roster, Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian. Peyton Manning retired following the team's Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers, and Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans in free agency.

The Broncos have been linked to a possible trade with the San Francisco 49ers to acquire Colin Kaepernick, but for now the team's starter heading into the 2016 season is Sanchez. Denver could also look to address the position in the NFL draft, where as many as four quarterbacks—Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook—could be first-round selections.

Manziel, at best, would seem to be a last-ditch backup plan for the Broncos. Schefter noted that if Denver does sign him, it "would do so with stipulations that would include mandatory counseling and possible clinical work for Manziel."

That's likely the case for any franchise considering giving Manziel a chance. It's possible Denver could be that team, given Kubiak's relationship with the quarterback, but at this point a Johnny Football tenure in Denver seems like a long shot.
