Twitter Reacts as Barcelona Come from Behind to Beat Atletico Madrid

Tom WebbApr 5, 2016

Barcelona claimed a narrow advantage from the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou.

Prior to kick-off, Fernando Torres was named in the visitors' starting XI as he looked to continue an impressive goalscoring run against the Catalans:

UEFA orders meant both teams were wearing their away kits at the Camp Nou, a move that didn't go down well online:

"

Has anyone explained why Barca and Atleti are both wearing away kits?

— Ryan Bailey (@RyanJayBailey) April 5, 2016"
"

Away kit nonsense at the Camp Nou.

"

Quite entertaining this Villarreal-PSG and a good chance for Nilmar there. Didn't realise he was still at the club...

The visitors defended well for the opening period and took the lead on 25 minutes through—you guessed it—Torres:

Fernando Torres just loves it, doesn’t he? pic.twitter.com/mHkfghqKa6

"

Someone needs to change Barca's wiki page to list Fernando Torres as the owner.

— Brooks Peck (@BrooksDT) April 5, 2016"
"

TORRES!!! He's looked relatively awful with the ball to this point but rifles home a beautiful pass through ter Stegen's legs to make it 1-0

— Sam Borden (@SamBorden) April 5, 2016"
"

And let's, for a moment, appreciate Koke's brilliant dink pass to spring Torres. Gorgeous touch.

"

Koke's first CL assist of the season...good time for it!

— Karl Matchett (@karlmatchett) April 5, 2016"

But Torres' evening took a sharp turn just 10 minutes later when he clattered into Sergio Busquets and picked up a second yellow card:

"

Goalscorer Fernando Torres gets a second yellow.

While Busquets too received criticism for his theatrical reaction:

"

Stupid challenge by Torres, but the way Busquets goes down is a disgrace. He should be booked too. Everything that is wrong with football.

— Tony Hodson (@tonyhodson1) April 5, 2016"
"

Busquets is a real professional. In getting opponents sent off when Barcelona have to come back in Champions.

The red card made Atleti's task considerably more difficult, but a strong first-half display provided encouragement:

"

If there's a team that knows how to play with 10 men is Atlético. Let's see if they can hold for another 45',

— Luis Garcia (@LuchoGarcia14) April 5, 2016"
"

Barcelona have already proven this week that they can't beat 10-man teams from Madrid...

— Ryan Bailey (@RyanJayBailey) April 5, 2016"
"

#Barca won't score here tonight.... Simeone has drilled his team as a defensive unit superbly.

— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) April 5, 2016"

When play resumed, Lionel Messi came within inches of an equaliser and a personal landmark with a glorious overhead kick:

"

Messi, on 499 career goals, juuuuust misses No. 500 with a bicycle kick that whizzes past the post. Absurd.

— Sam Borden (@SamBorden) April 5, 2016"
"

Messi so close to goal number 500, and what a goal it would have been.

— Ben McAleer (@BenMcAleer1) April 5, 2016"

Neymar too came close shortly after as Atletico desperately held on:

"

Barcelona v Atletico now effectively an attack v defence training exercise, played at full intensity in front of 99,000 people. Superb.

The visitors' resistance was finally broken on 63 minutes, when Jordi Alba's wayward shot was turned in by Luis Suarez:

"

It was only a matter of time. Suarez levels things. Barça are so good this half it's a joy to watch.

"

— daRealAAkinfenwa (@daRealAkinfenwa) April 5, 2016"

Though there was some talk as to whether the Uruguayan should still have been on the pitch after appearing to kick out at Juanfran in the first half:

"

Vintage Suarez, this - almost kicks a defender into the stands in first half; slaps someone in second half; scores two goals, settles game.

— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) April 5, 2016"
"

Suarez strikes again, but should he still be on the pitch?

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) April 5, 2016"
"

Shouldn't be on the pitch, but my word what a goal from Suarez, superb header, where'd that power come from?

Meanwhile, it was proving a nostalgic night for Liverpool fans:

"

"

While Liverpool fans hope someone bids for Benteke and discuss a tribunal fee for Ings, Suarez and Torres rock the #UCL quarterfinals. Sigh.

"

"

The game finished 2-1, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg in Madrid on April 13:

"

Full time
Barcelona 2-1 Atletico

and I'm giving Lucas Hdz man of the match. So good tonight, composed & good timing except *that* tackle.

— Karl Matchett (@karlmatchett) April 5, 2016"
"

With 11 men, with 10 or with nine, it's amazing how this Atlético team compete. Didn't deserve to lose tonight.
