Tre Shaw Tweets Top 10: Odds on Where 4-Star CB Lands
Georgia defensive back Tre Shaw provided an updated glimpse at his recruitment process Wednesday afternoon, revealing an expansive list of top collegiate options on Twitter:
The 4-star prospect named 10 schools that hold his attention approximately 10 months shy of national signing day. Without unveiling any order of preference, Shaw listed Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Despite naming this vast mix of programs, Shaw made it clear he isn't closing the door on even more opportunities elsewhere.
"I have many more schools of interest," he tweeted.
Needless to say, this process doesn't seem to be approaching its conclusion in the near future. With at least 10 universities under serious consideration and the possibility of several more entering a murky picture, any expectations of an impending commitment are unwarranted.
Shaw, a 6'0", 180-pound junior at Cedar Grove High School, is rated No. 26 nationally among cornerbacks in 247Sports' composite rankings. He is considered a top-30 overall recruit in the Peach State this cycle.
At a time when many members of the 2017 recruiting class are starting to narrow their collegiate focus, Shaw is opting to keep things wide-open. He initially appeared primed to pledge much earlier in the process, producing a top-five list of favorites last July.
That group featured Auburn, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Ole Miss. Despite staff alterations ranging from head coach (Georgia) to defensive coordinator (Auburn), four of those five teams remain in the mix.
Ole Miss, which led that top-five list according to Shaw, is now on the outside looking in.
Considering the schools squarely involved here, let's examine some of his most likely destinations and assign odds for the chances of each eventually securing a commitment from the coveted playmaker.
Auburn: 3-1
Close friend and former teammate Antwuan Jackson became a fixture of the Tigers' 2016 recruiting class in December when he announced a commitment. Considered a top-10 defensive tackle in the cycle, Jackson enrolled early on campus and could help convince a pair of fellow Cedar Grove standouts to follow his lead.
Along with Shaw, 4-star offensive tackle Netori Johnson is also eyeing a potential high school reunion at Auburn.
"Me and Antwuan talked about playing together, and me and Tre talked about playing together," Johnson told Wesley Sinor of AL.com earlier this month.
Shaw expressed plans to attend Auburn's spring game on April 9, according to Chuck Kingsbury of SEC Country. And of course, he dropped the 'D-word' when an offer first arrived from the Tigers, and that expression should never be overlooked in the recruiting industry:
North Carolina: 5-1
UNC, another former top-five option for Shaw that's still squarely in contention, welcomed him to campus for a junior day event in February. It was his first time at Chapel Hill since the 2015 summer camp at which he warranted a Tar Heels offer.
"I'm really interested in North Carolina right now," Shaw told Don Callahan of Scout.com following the trip. "They really stood out to me when I took the visit. They welcomed me with open arms when I got there."
Shaw has family in North Carolina, according to Callahan, and could again make the campus a stop during his travels this spring.
"I just want to get to know the people better," he told Callahan last week.
His teammate also spilled the beans about Shaw's budding rapport with the UNC staff.
"(Shaw) likes Auburn and he also likes North Carolina," Johnson told Sinor.
The Tar Heels appear to be gaining momentum as things move forward in this pursuit. His pledge would represent a major splash if UNC's staff is able to reel him in from out of state.
Florida: 6-1
The Gators entered extremely early into this pursuit among Power Five programs, providing Florida with longevity here. Head coach Jim McElwain and his newly assembled staff identified Shaw as a target instantly, extending an offer shortly after his sophomore season.
It would be another eight weeks before fellow SEC schools such as Auburn, Ole Miss and Georgia joined the race, per 247Sports. The Gators, fresh off an inaugural McElwain campaign that largely exceeded expectations, remain a force to be reckoned with in this recruitment 16 months later.
Shaw spent significant time at Florida facilities last summer, and you can anticipate that the Gators staff will look to land him in the bleachers for at least one game at The Swamp this season.
Aside from Auburn, Florida is the university we'd currently project Shaw to attend if he elects to enroll at one of the six SEC schools included in his widespread collection of possible landing spots.
