Twitter Reacts as England Complete Stunning Comeback to Beat Germany

Tom WebbMar 26, 2016

The hopes and expectations of England fans across the country went through the roof on Saturday, as Roy Hodgson's young side completed a remarkable turnaround to beat Germany, 3-2, in Berlin.

Prior to the match, Hodgson named a side dominated by in-form Tottenham Hotspur players:

"

Danny Rose starting vs. Germany will mean that 11 out of last 19 England debutants will have done so whilst managed by Mauricio Pochettino.

— Spurs Stat Man (@SpursStatMan) March 25, 2016"

Looking forward to seeing how Dier plays tonight. Interesting to see whether he can become solution to England's holding midfield problem

As kick-off approached, the two sides shared a moment's silence for the 31 people killed in the terrorist attacks in Brussels on Wednesday:

With the game underway, it was the away side's new kit that was getting all the attention:

"

FACT: England have never lost when wearing a kit stitched together out of Czech Republic, Cambodia and USA shirts.

— Daniel Storey (@danielstorey85) March 26, 2016"
"

Can't think of a worse England strip.

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) March 26, 2016"
"

Just a small fashion statement. What sort of England kit is this?

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) March 26, 2016"
"

I really hope this is a terrible 0-0 draw; I never want to see replays of these kits again. Please let nobody do anything spectacular.

— Jonathan Wilson (@jonawils) March 26, 2016"
"

"Why are we playing this friendly?"

"To give people a chance to get over how bad our kit is so it won't hit morale too much come the Euros"

"

England and Germany look like two unlicensed national teams on an old Pro Evolution.

— Jack Pitt-Brooke (@JackPittBrooke) March 26, 2016"

Germany looked to have taken the lead after 25 minutes, but the linesman wrongly ruled a Mario Gomez goal out for offside:

"

England's luck in at the double. Poor defending not punished as Gomez is adjudged to be offside after putting the ball in the net.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) March 26, 2016"
"

Pro: #Gomez goal disallowed

That appeared to wake the visitors up, with Dele Alli the pick of an encouraging team performance:

"

Really enjoying this from England. So much energy. Alli is a star waiting to happen.

— Tony Hodson (@tonyhodson1) March 26, 2016"

Until Toni Kroos fired past an injured Jack Butland:

"

Some strike from Toni Kroos, vicious strike. Butland, who'd just sustained an injury, caught out. Off on stretcher, Forster on. 1-0 Germany

"

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) March 26, 2016"

But the goal didn't deter England. Alli picked up where he'd left off as the second half got underway:

"

Alli, who has been top class, has a shot turned away by Neuer.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) March 26, 2016"
"

Dele Alli the star of the show for England tonight. Looks very comfortable at this level. Looks like he's relishing the company he's in.

"

Deli Alli.......... League one last year, bossing an international this year 👍🏻👊🏻⚽️

— Tubes (@TubesSoccerAM) March 26, 2016"

Jordan Henderson wasn't impressing so much:

"

Jordan Henderson always seems very angry

— Oliver Holt (@OllieHolt22) March 26, 2016"
"

Jordan Henderson ably deputising for Wayne Rooney in the 'shout at everyone for not doing things you also aren't doing' stakes.

— Daniel Storey (@danielstorey85) March 26, 2016"
"

Henderson has regressed.

— Nooruddean (@BeardedGenius) March 26, 2016"

Germany doubled their lead on 57 minutes, when Sami Khedira's pass found the head of Gomez:

"

"

That defence…Cahill caught out, Gomez heads in. England far too open. Little protection from midfield. 2-0 Germany.

— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) March 26, 2016"
"

That was way too easy for Germany. Encouraging night in some ways for England but defence is a concern that won't go away

— Oliver Holt (@OllieHolt22) March 26, 2016"
"

2 - Germany have scored with both of their shots on target so far v England. Clinical.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) March 26, 2016"

Harry Kane hit back almost immediately, losing his defender with a swift turn and finding the bottom corner with a clinical finish:

"

Now there's a man who is clinical. Excellent low finish from Harry Kane and it's 2-1.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) March 26, 2016"
"

It's fair to say England fans weren't missing their injured captain, Wayne Rooney:

"

Starting to look like Harry Kane might just be good enough to come on for Wayne Rooney after 65 minutes of each game this summer.

— Andrew Thomas (@andi_thomas) March 26, 2016"
"

Genuinely at the stage now where I'm hoping England's captain is injured for the Euros.

— Daniel Storey (@danielstorey85) March 26, 2016"

With just one goal in it, Hodgson turned to Jamie Vardy on the substitutes' bench:

"

2-1 down to Germany.

Need a goal

Who you gonna call? #GERENG https://t.co/BeX2jTQuMv

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) March 26, 2016"
"

Only 20 minutes to make his mark, but I reckon Vardy might nick a late "WHAT? WHAT?" in a German defender's face.

— Adam Hurrey (@FootballCliches) March 26, 2016"

And the Leicester City man quickly delivered, beating Manuel Neuer with a sensational finish:

"

JAMIE VARDY IS HAVING A PARTY

The previously infallible Alli then spurned a golden chance to put England ahead:

"

They thought it was Alli over....

— Matt Dickinson (@DickinsonTimes) March 26, 2016"
"

Dele belly

— Paul Kelso (@pkelso) March 26, 2016"
"

You've been superb tonight Dele Alli, but every time you miss a chance like that we are posting this again #GERENG pic.twitter.com/Mkl4Z0X6T7

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) March 26, 2016"

But it wasn't to matter, as Eric Dier's thumping header made it 2-3:

"

Heaven help us...England ahead with a header from Eric Dier just as we go into injury time. What a comeback.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) March 26, 2016"

England saw out the remaining few minutes to clinch a mightily impressive victory:
