La Liga Table 2016: Latest Standings Following Friday's Week 30 Results

Tom SunderlandMar 18, 2016

Borja Baston rescued a point for Eibar on Friday after his 88th-minute equaliser cancelled out Emiliano Velazquez's seventh-minute opener to seal a 1-1 draw against Getafe.

A draw in Madrid meant Eibar have still picked up just two points in their last six games, and while the result lifted Getafe outside the relegation zone, they'll rue the shared point haul as a win gone astray.

Atletico Madrid travel to Sporting Gijon in Saturday's early kick-off as they look to close the gap on leaders Barcelona, who make the trip to El Madrigal on Sunday in the hope of retaining an eight-point cushion at the summit.

Eibar Scrape Late Point at Getafe

Getafe's winless streak was extended to 10 games on Friday evening after they conceded a last-gasp equaliser some 81 minutes after a Velazquez header broke the deadlock.

It took the hosts just seven minutes to open the scoring after Pablo Sarabia flung a free-kick toward the back post, and Velazquez's towering frame was on hand to fire past Eibar goalkeeper Asier Riesgo.

It was fitting Getafe's breakthrough should come from dead-ball situation, too, considering manager Fran Escriba's side found it quite so difficult to create chances from open play.

The Guardian's Sid Lowe confirmed Eibar were indeed in the ascendancy despite failing to pull the scoreline level at the break, having ruled the majority of the shooting chances:

The game then sparked into life with half-an-hour remaining as Getafe forward Alvaro Vazquez came close to doubling the home outfit's lead, only to be denied by the woodwork.

It was then just several minutes later that Eibar winger Takashi Inui also thudded Vicente Guaita's left post, and La Casa del Futbol provided an image of just how close the Japan international came to levelling at 1-1:

Try as they might, Eibar were denied at every turn. An elusive equaliser eluded them until the Getafe fell asleep at a most inopportune moment, and the walls finally caved under insurmountable pressure.

Inui squeezed into a pocket of space down the left before Baston was gifted seven yards of space in all directions. Twitter account AtleticoFans agreed his back-heeled stroke was a touch of genius:

The 23-year-old has made waves for Eibar earlier this season and will have assuredly been overjoyed to bring an end to his five-match scoring drought by netting his 17th of the league season.

That late strike also saw Getafe miss out on what would have been their first clean sheet since early January. Escriba will rue the two points that just evaded his grasp.

Los Azulones may be clear of the bottom three for the time being, but an away trip to fellow strugglers Rayo Vallecano in a fortnight's time could bring them back down to earth all too swiftly.

Meanwhile, Eibar's struggle for points lingers on. They remain at serious risk of falling outside La Liga's top 10 for the first time this season, with a home fixture against Villarreal next on their schedule.
